Analysis: Maine putting emphasis on rebounding and hustle ahead of Texas

...There is no doubt Maine is facing a steep uphill battle against the Longhorns, but Amy Vachon believes the Black Bears have the blueprint to compete with the Longhorns.

"They're more athletic than us and they're better at it so we can't get into that game with them. We need to control the tempo and control the boards. If we do those two things and we compete at a high level I think we'll be alright," Vachon said.

If Maine wants to have any chance against the Longhorns it'll need a big game out of forward Fanny Wadling. The sophomore exploded in the America East title game against Hartford scoring 10 points, grabbing eight rebounds, and dishing out six assists.

UMaine assistant coach excited to return home to Texas for NCAA tourney game

...Perhaps the most excited person was Black Bears assistant coach/recruiting coordinator Jhasmin Player, because she is returning to her home state.

Player is from Houston and played at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Waco is 102 miles from Austin and Houston is 146 miles from the state capital.

Player also knows Texas head coach Karen Aston, who was an assistant at Baylor.

“I played for Karen for one year,” Player said

Maine accustomed to size disadvantage
The Black Bears are used to facing taller opponents, like they'll see Saturday against Texas in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Horrible match-up. Texas giants shooting lights out. Maine playing tentative and afraid to touch them.

Maine needs some height if they want to do anything on the national scene....Texas is just eating them alive. Definitely an eye opener/slap in the face for this young team.
