Trailing by 8 at half time 37-29 and 16 points in the 3rd quarter, it was UMaine's defense and newly found inside game that turned the game around for their outstanding 74-69 overtime win over Albany in a winner takes first place for the championship of the regular season and home court advantage if Maine gets to the conference tourney final.

Maine held Albany to 29 points in the 3rd and 4th quarters. 19 in the third and just 10 in the last quarter. Add to that they held Albany to just 3 fouls shots in the 5 minute overtime as the game was tied 66 each at the end of 40 minutes.

So Maine held Albany to just 13 points in the last 15 minutes of the game. They continually shutdown the Danes inside game with outstanding help defense.

Granted T. Sutton's 27 points most coming from the paint as Maine went inside to her and at 5'10" she completely got great block post up position and scored power layups or foul shots from being fouled on those great stop, and power layups giving up several inches in height to the Albany defenders that tried to defend her. Sutton also lead Maine with 7 rebounds and had 5 assists. Maine had 17 assists on 27 made field goals over 60% which is a great team stat, with Saar having over half of them with 9 assists. Real team effort on offense as well as defense.

Best 15 minutes of basketball for Maine this year on both sides of the ball. In fact, best last 15 minutes of basketball players playing and a head coach coaching I have seen all year at any level!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The team oriented help defense along with getting the ball inside the most that I have seen them attempt to do were the two biggest factors in Maine coming back for the great win.

Give that credit to Coach Vachon for developing the confidence in her team to go inside time and time again to the best power layup shooting player in the conference. Sutton had 11 field goals of 13 FGA's and 5 foul shots. Sutton had 15 of her 27 points in the 2nd half comeback.

Great offensive adjustment as Maine changed their offensive set up to get the ball inside and went there when their 3 point game was not very effective (2 for 13 first half) until late in the game when Parisse Rossignol hit one and Julie Brosseau hit 2 that opened the game to Maine's (3 for 7 2nd half). In fact, Maine was 0 for 3 for 3's until Rossiginol and Brosseau hit their late 3 pointers. Great coaching move to keep going inside to Sutton when the 3 game was ineffective to get Maine back into the game especially playing without Blanca Millan the last 10:53 of the game.

Mane continued to play even harder after losing high scorer Blanca Millan on fouls with 5:33 minutes to go in the 4th quarter.

This was a truly team victory from all the players and the coaching staff and especially Coach Vachon who went inside when the 3 game was off with Maine down 16.

Thought she completely out coached Albany's fine coach and her adjustment of going inside to Sutton was the key move of the game offensively which then opened up Rossignol and Brosseau for those 3 clutch 3's at the needed time. Vachon adjusted to an ineffective 3 game and Albany did not adjust to Maine going inside to Sutton.

The most I have seen any team at any level this year high school, college or the NBA go inside continually in a one game setting.

Put it this way Maine defended the Albany post up game a lot better then Albany defended Maine and Sutton.

Congratulations to coach Vachon and her team and good luck in the conference tourney this coming weekend at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland on Saturday and Sunday. There 20th win of the season over Albany was their biggest win of the season so far with hopefully even bigger ones are in their near future.

With this win Coach Vachon has to be the America East Women's Regular Season Coach of the Year.
