Black Bear Baseball looks to pick up where they left off

With spring looming ever closer, and the University of Maine baseball team starting its season with a weekend series against Texas Tech, the team comes in another year older, and with that, adds another year of experience.

Maine is coming off a 25-29 season that saw them lose the first three games to Winthrop University and go into a stretch between March 7 and April 1 that saw them lose 10 games out of 11 played, including a series cancellation against the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Playing away from Orono was a thorn in the Black Bears’ side, going an abysmal 1-18 on the road, compared to a more respectable 14-5 at Mahaney Diamond, and 10-6 at neutral site games.

For the Black Bears, it all comes down to having the right attitude and doing things the right way. And according to Head Coach Nick Derba, that starts at the top.

BB vs Ohio University
Emerson, Ga.
W 5-1
Recap

Baseball Tops Ohio, 5-1, Behind Strong Outing From Courtney

EMERSON, Ga. – The University of Maine baseball team used a four-run first inning and a strong outing from Justin Courtney en route to a 5-1 win over the Ohio University Bobcats in a neutral site ballgame at LakePoint Facility on Friday afternoon.

Jeremy Pena staked the Black Bears to 1-0 lead in the first at-bat of the game, smacking his second homerun of the season to left field on the first pitch of the game from Ohio's starter Gerry Salisbury. Danny Casals then followed that up with a three-run home run, knocking in Cody Pasic, who had been hit by a pitch, and Christopher Bec, who had singled towards short.

The Bobcats' Devon Garcia led off with a single but the right-hander Courtney buckled down and ended the threat, forcing the Bobcats to ground into a double-play and striking out one while looking.

After neither team was able to push a runner across – with Courtney retiring the side in order on two strike outs and a ground out – Hernen Sardinas led off the top of the third inning with a solo shot for a 5-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Ohio got a leadoff double from Tanner Piechnick and two batters later he crossed the plate on a single to center field to make it 5-1.

After Courtney retired the side in the top of fifth, the Black Bears loaded the bases in the bottom but were unable to push another run across. However, with Courtney putting together two 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh. Cody Laweryson entered the game in the bottom of the eighth with an Ohio runner on first and struck out Garcia to end the inning and then Matt Geoffrion forced two ground outs and struck out another to end the game.

Courtney went 7-2/3 innings, giving up one run on four hits for his first win of the season. The senior struck out nine batters on the day while Laweryson and Geoffrion had one strikeout each. Salisbury took the loss for the Bobcats.

Sardinas finished 2-for-5 with one RBI while six other Black Bears had hits. Maine finished with eight hits to Ohio's four while neither team committed an error.

The Black Bears (1-4) and Bobcats (2-3) will meet tomorrow for a doubleheader, with the first game set to start at 1 p.m.

Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader With Ohio University

EMERSON, Ga. – The University of Maine baseball team fell, 7-5, in the first game of a doubleheader with Ohio University on Saturday at the LakePoint Facility but came back for a 2-1 win in the second game on Trevor DeLaite's first win of the season.

A rough first half inning – three runs on two hits and two errors against a Maine defense acting as the home team in the first game of the day – sent the Black Bears into the first at-bats against Michael Klein with a three-run deficit.

The team began to chip away immediately, grabbing a run back in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly - with Jeremy Pena scoring on Christopher Bec's sacrifice fly to right field - and taking another one back to score in the second when Brandon Vicens scored on a Caleb Kerbs single to left field. Yet Ohio got a double in the third to drive in a fourth run and the Bobcats continued to answer each of Maine's responses.

With two outs and runners on second and third, Nick Silva took over for starter Eddie Emerson on the mound. The Bobcats added one more run on an infield single from Ryan Sargent in the inning to take a 5-2 lead but in Maine's turn at the plate, Hernen Sardinas doubed to center and then score on a Jonathan Bennett single to make it it a two-run game.

A home run from Rudy Rott in the gave Ohio a 6-3 lead in the top of the fourth but – in keeping with the game one theme – the Black Bears didn't back down. Kerbs had two timely hits in the sixth and eighth innings to keep it a game. First his single drove in a run to make it 6-4 and then he used a double to left field in the eighth to make it 6-5 as the teams headed into the ninth.

But back-to-back doubles from the Bobcats allowed Rott to cross the plate and make it a 7-5 that would hold through Maine's final at-bat.

Silva took the loss for Maine, pitching 5.1 innings while allowing four runs on eight hits but striking out seven. Starter Eddie Emerson went 1.2 innings, allowing two runs and striking out two while Cody Laweryson pitched two innings, allowing one run and striking out three. Kerbs finished with three hits and three RBIs while Bec and Bennett each had two hits and one RBI. Jeremy Pena, Cody Pasic, Hernen Sardinas, Brandon Vicens and Colin Ridley added hits for the Black Bears.
--

Sardinas gave Maine the first lead in the second game, crushing a ball over the right field fence in the second frame. An inning later Maine looked to go up by two when Jeremy Pena singled and then stole second but the junior was stranded on the bag.

Ohio threatened with runners in scoring position in three-straight innings but DeLaite forced two ground outs to kill the threats in the second and third and kept on rolling. Butch Baird was not as fortunate for the Bobcats, as Kevin Doody grounded in his first career RBI in the top of the fifth to give the Black Bears a 2-0 lead.

Maine kept pressing for a third run but couldn't push it across. Pena led off the eighth with a triple to the gap but Kenny Ogg retired the next three batters and then Ryan Sargent got out of a two-runners on jam in the ninth.

With two strikes and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the Bobcats were able to pull a run back on an Evan Bourn home run but Maine held on for the 2-1 win.

DeLaite went 5.0 innings for the win, allowing three hits while striking out two and forcing five groundouts. Zach Winn went 3.0 innings in relief, allowing just one hit while striking out four, and Matt Geoffrion pitched one inning, allowing one run and striking out two. Kerbs, Pena and Sardinas each finished with two hits.

Maine (2-5) and Ohio (3-4) will wrap up the series tomorrow with an 11 a.m. first pitch.

Due to the technological limits of the neutral site location, live stats, audio, and video will not be available for this series. Follow @MaineBaseball on Twitter for updates.
