SCOUTING THE BLACK BEARS:
The Black Bears are coming off a 2017 campaign which saw them finish 19-25, 10-6 in America East play, and advancing to the America East Title Game. The Black Bears failed to win their second consecutive America East title, dropping the championship game to UAlbany by a final of 6-1.

Maine returns six positions starters, two pitchers and 12 total letter winners from last year's squad. The Black Bears feature five of their top six hitters returning from a year ago, led by America East All-Conference first team outfielder, Rachel Carlson. The senior is coming off a career-best year which saw her bat .364 while leading the team in hits (51), runs (28) and stolen bases. Carlson ranked seventh among America East hitters in total average and led the Black Bears with a .434 on-base percentage to go along with 15 multi-hit games and posted Maine's longest streak of safely reaching base (18). Alyssa Derrick returns as Maine's biggest power threat, and perhaps the most feared power threat in the America East. Derrick matched Maine's single-season home run record with an America East leading 15 in 2017 and ranked fourth in the league with 37 RBIs. Derrick enters her junior season just 12 home runs shy of tying Maine's all-time home run record (35). Meghan Royle, an America East All-Conference second team selection, hit .281 a year ago with 20 runs, 22 RBIs and team-best efforts in doubles (7) and triples (4). Senior Erika Leonard also returns a year after hitting .235 with 24 runs, 22 RBIs, eight stolen bases and a team-high 19 walks. Maddie Decker, who assumed catching duties for last season's America East tournament play, will look to step up in that role this year after the departure of Rachel Harvey to graduation. The Black Bears will also look to fill the void left at shortstop by four-year starter Felicia Lennon with junior Laurine German.

Softball Goes 1-1 on Day Two of Seahawk Classic

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- For the second consecutive day, the University of Maine softball team went 1-1 at the 2018 Seahawk Classic. The Black Bears avenged a loss to UNC Wilmington on day one with a 5-1 victory on Saturday before falling to Bucknell, 3-0.

In game one, Molly Flowers and Annie Kennedy combined to surrender just one run while striking out six to lift the Black Bears over UNC Wilmington, 5-1.

Rachel Carlson continued her early season tear at the dish, going 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs while Erika Leonard and Alyssa Derrick each added an RBI.

The Black Bears broke a scoreless tie with a single run in the top of the second. Meghan Royle started the inning with a leadoff single before stealing and second and later coming around to score on Kristen Niland's single to center which was bobbled by the Seahawks's outfielder.

Carlson started the third with a triple before scoring on Derrick's sac-fly to right, giving Maine a 2-0 lead.

UNC Wilmington cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning on Lacey Fox's RBI single to short.

Maine distanced itself late, pushing across three runs in the top of the seventh. Shanna Scribner drew a one-out walk before singles from Faythe Goins and Carlson loaded the bases. Leonard's groundout to short brought in Scribner before Derrick was able to reach on a throwing error. Carlson and Sarah Coyne, who reentered after Goins' single, each scored on the error, giving Maine a 5-1 advantage.

Kennedy shut the door in the bottom of the inning to secure Maine's 5-1 victory.

Flowers picked up the win, her first of the season, after scattering four hits and giving up one run with four strikeouts over 4.0 innings. Kennedy notched her first save of the season, tossing 3.0 innings of one hit, shutout ball while fanning a pair.

--

Maine's bats were silenced in game two as the Black Bears were held to just two hits in a 3-0 loss to Bucknell.

Alyssa Derrick and Amanda Nee tallied the only hits for the Black Bears. Kyleigh O'Donnell, who started in the circle for the Black Bears, turned in a solid performance. O'Donnell tossed 4.0 innings of no-hit shutout ball with three strikeouts and a walk. Volk picks up the tough loss in relief, surrendering three runs on four hits with a strikeout and two walks over 2.0 innings. Kennedy added an inning of shutout relief, fanning one.

Neither team could push a run across in the opening four innings.

Bucknell took a 3-0 lead with a three-run top of the fifth. Taylor Wolfgang's one-out RBI double to the gap in left center allowed Ryanne Rokos to score from first. Following a groundout, Bucknell plated two more with a two out rally. Tara Baglivo's single to center scored Wolfgang before Baglivo came in on Lauren Hadley's single.

In the bottom of the seventh, Nee was able to record her first career hit, but Maine was unable to take advantage.

The Black Bears were held scoreless in the Saturday finale, dropping the contest by a 3-0 final.

Maine closes out its weekend at the Seahawk Classic on Sunday when it meets Longwood at 9 a.m.

Decker's Three-Run Walk-Off HR Lifts Maine Past Longwood

Wilmington, N.C. -- Maddie Decker's three-run walk-off home run propelled the University of Maine softball team to a 6-4 victory over Longwood in the Black Bears' finale at the Seahawk Classic.

Rachel Carlson tallied three hits, scored a run and drove in another to help lead the offensive attack. For Carlson, it was her third time in Maine's first five games in which she recorded three hits.

Annie Kennedy picked up her first win of the season after working 4.0 innings of no-hit relief wth one strikeout. Molly Flowers started the game in the circle for Maine, going 2.0 innings while giving up two hits and one run with two strikeouts. Kyleigh O'Donnell added one inning of relief work, surrendering three runs on one hit and two walks with a pair of strikeouts.

Longwood began the scoring with a run in the top of the first on JessicaSmith's two-out RBI double down the left field line.

Maine took a 3-1 advantage with three runs in the bottom of the third. Shanna Scribner started the inning with a single to right before moving to second on a wild pitch. Sarah Coyne's bunt single put runners on the corners before Carlson's single to left brought in Scribner. Erika Leonard's sacrifice bunt led to a throwing error which allowed Coyne to score before Carlson came in on a double play groundout by Alyssa Derrick.

Longwood responded, pushing across three runs in the top of the fourth to regain a one run lead.

The lead would stand through six as Maine would face its final chance in the bottom of the seventh. Leonard and Derrick would each reach on a pair of fielder's choice tallies, setting the tone for Decker who launched a three-run homer over the wall in left, giving Maine a 6-4 walk-off victory.

The Black Bears return to action on March 2 when they travel to Oklahoma State to take on Saint Francis and the Cowgirls on Friday beginning at 1:30 p.m.
