Soccer Announces 11 Additions to Roster for 2018 Season

ORONO, Maine – University of Maine women's soccer head coach Scott Atherley has announced 11 newcomers for the 2018 season, including 10 freshman and one transfer. The group will join a Black Bear squad looking to make its 14th America East postseason tournament in the last 16 seasons.

The newcomers arrive from a variety of regions, including five U.S. states (Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Colorado and Massachusetts) as well as Canada, Sweden and Germany. The Black Bear roster now has hometowns from six states and five countries.

Incoming Player Bios
Hannah Bamford Midfielder | 5-9 | Rochester, N.H. (Spaulding HS/Seacoast United SC)
Bamford, a captain as a senior, notched 14 goals and 10 assists in four years of varsity soccer at Spaulding High School, being named the Offensive Player of the Year in 2017, Defender of the Year in 2015 and Most Valuable Player in 2016. Her Seacoast United SC squad won state championships in 2011, 2013 and 2015-17 and she was a member of the Seacoast United Women's WPSL team in 2017. Additionally, Bamford played futsal for Futsal NH (winning four regional titles and claiming third place at the national championships in 2013 and 2014) and varsity tennis. Her sister, Olivia, is a member of the women's soccer team at Maine.

Coach Atherley on Bamford: "Hannah is a true No. 6. She has exceptional passing range, both long and short. Her athleticism and grit, combined with her distribution prowess, gives us a combination of talents that we haven't had in our midfield for a few years."

Emma Donovan Forward | 5-7 | Québec City, Québec (Séminaire Saint-François)
Donovan, a striker, scored 14 goals in 25 games played in the Québec U17 AAA Provincial League this season on her way to team most valuable player honors. Her Olympique CRSA club was named the team of the year in 2017. Donovan also played basketball in high school, earning most valuable player honors.

Coach Atherley on Donovan: "Emma is a true goal scorer and she is very instinctive in the final third. Emma is clever and dynamic in 1-v-1 situations and she is deliberate about going to goal. Seemingly, she can make something out of nothing and is always a threat to score goals when she is on the field."

Susannah Gaines Defender | 5-7 | Lexington, Mass. (Lexington HS/FC Stars)
Gaines, a defender, played her club soccer for the FC Stars, helping the team to a first-place finish in the Massachusetts State Cup and a second-place finish in the National Premier League Championships. She was also named a Middlesex League All-Star and played basketball in high school.

Coach Atherley on Gaines: "Susannah is an intelligent 1-v-1 defender. She is technically sound and composed under pressure. Susannah's versatility will enable her to potentially play a number of positions for us."

Kira Kutzinski Goalkeeper | 5-10 | Bünde, Germany (Erich Gutenberg Berufskolleg/Herforder SV)
Kutsinski has posted three shutouts in seven starts so far this season for her club in Germany, Herforder SV. She first joined the Second Bundesliga squad for the 2016 season. While playing indoor soccer, she was a member of the runner-up 2015-16 West German squad.

Coach Atherley on Kutzinski: "Kira comes to us with great experience having played in the Bundesliga II. Her strengths are well suited for Division I soccer. She has good size and athleticism. Kira is strong in the air and very aggressive off of her line. Fundamentally, she is sound in all areas and her insight is reflective of her development in a professional environment."

Julia Mahoney Midfield | 5-8 | St.-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Québec (Séminaire Saint-François)
Mahoney tallied 19 goals and 17 assists this season in the Québec U17 AAA Provincial League, good for eighth best in the league and also took home a Player of the Month Award during the season. In 2016, Mahoney notched 12 assists and 16 goals to finish seventh in the league in scoring. Mahoney also played basketball and ran cross country in high school.

Coach Atherley on Mahoney: "Julia is a dynamic central midfielder. She possesses outstanding vision and insight. Julia is very adept at threatening defenses with her runs and penetrating passes. She can also score. Her size, speed and quickness will be a welcome addition to our midfield."

Lauren McCann Forward | 5-4 | Somerdale, N.J. (Sterling HS/Player Development Academy)
McCann, a forward, finished her high school career with 57 goals and 60 assists, winning the 2014-15 Group 2 Championship. She was a two-time First Team All-Conference (2016, 2017) and Second Team All-Conference (2014, 2015) honoree. McCann also played one year of softball, three years of varsity track and was a member of the National Honor Society.

Coach Atherley on McCann: "Lauren is a tenacious attacking player. She is fast, competitive and aggressive. Her will to win often finds her scoring key goals for her team."

Gaby Panagakos Forward | 5-4 | Scarborough, Maine (Scarborough HS/GPS Maine)
Panagakos played four years of varsity soccer at Scarborough HS and finished her high school career with 60 goals and an All-New England honor. Panagakos, who set the single-season record for goals scored (22) as a junior, was a two-time All-State honoree, three-time All-Conference player and was twice named the conference offensive player of the year. She was a five-time State Cup champion with her club soccer squad, GPS Maine. Additionally, she competed in indoor and outdoor track and was the 100-meter outdoor conference champion and a member of the state championship 4x200-meter relay squad.

Coach Atherley on Panagakos: "Gaby is a powerful attacking player. She has very good speed and she can strike the ball well from distance. Gaby is aggressive by nature and is effective about getting on to the end of balls in the box."

Amanda Sandberg Defender | 5-4 | Skurup, Sweden (Polhemskolan/Skurups AIF)
Sandberg joins the Black Bears after playing 20 games, including 14 starts, for Skurups AIF in Swedish First Division during the 2017 season. In 2016, she was a Gothia Cup G18 Champion and won the Swedish Second Division. Sandberg was the Skurups AIF Rookie of the Year in 2015 after making her First Division debut the year before at age 14.

Coach Atherley on Sandberg: "Amanda is a true left-sided player. Defensively she is quick, intelligent and patient. Amanda is aggressive about getting forward from the back and she possesses the physical qualities which allows her to do so with regularity. The combination of her pace, intelligence and versatility will enable her play anywhere on our left side."

Michele Silva Goalkeeper | 5-5 ½ | Mahwah, N.J.
Silva comes to Orono after racking up over 500 saves in her four years of high school soccer. She helped her team to 2015 and 2016 league championships as well as a 2016 state sectional championship. As a senior captain this past fall, Silva earned First Team All-County and All-League honors to go with her junior year First Team All-League honors. In addition to soccer, Silva competed on the track team.

Coach Atherley on Silva: "Michele is a quick and reflexive shot-stopper. Her confident and fearless nature make her difficult to beat. With a strong club and high school background, her potential to develop into a quality collegiate keeper is very good."

Alison Tobey Goalkeeper | 5-8 | Colorado Springs, Colo. (Palmer Ridge HS/Real Colorado [Denver])
Tobey joins the Black Bears after competing for one year at the University of Denver. She played in three matches for the Pioneers in 2017, including a start against Colorado (9/16). She shared one shutout on the season and made five saves overall. Before Denver, Tobey was a State Cup finalist in 2012 with the Colorado Storm, a team she played with from 2012-15 before playing for Real Colorado. She also captained her high school program and earned all-conference and All-Colorado Honorable Mention honors.

Coach Atherley on Tobey: "Ali is a great find and fit for our program. She comes to us with a strong playing pedigree. With proven Division I experience and a semester to acclimate to our school and team, she will have a great opportunity to impact our team, next fall."

Lauren Young Defender | 5-3 | Bangor, Maine (Bangor HS/Seacoast United Mariners)
Young played four years of varsity soccer at Bangor High School, helping the Rams to a state title in 2015. The defender was a State Cup Champion with her club team in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and was a part of the Olympic Development Program in 2015. Young's club team also won a 2017 GPS Tournament in which she took home most valuable player honors. In addition to soccer, Young played varsity basketball for the Rams.

Coach Atherley on Young: "Lauren is a local product who has impressed us with her determination and willingness to prove herself at the Division I level. After suffering a significant injury less than a year ago, she is clearly on track to make her mark at this level."
