Er excited for fresh start after tough 2017

BANGOR - For Ilker Er, the dawn of 2018 has been a breath of fresh air.

"That was kinda like a good start you know like conference games. Kinda like a new season for me like 2018 I kinda want to forget 2017, it was not a good year for me," Er said.

The Maine men’s basketball big man is just 12 months removed from a torn ACL.

While the road to recovery has been a tough one, Er has never showed any signs of giving in.

Wow, thought it was a misprint. 69-29 now. Coach Cim has a point. Albany's five starters have played most of the minutes. Maine has played a jumble of 11-12 guys.

Maine men score 10 1st half points-lose 84-66 to Albany

Postby bcbc55 » Sat Jan 13, 2018 4:08 pm

Half-time Albany 48-10 Final 84-66

Albany takes it easy on Maine in second half.

Maine shot 21-56 from the floor for 37.5% Albany 21 of 58 for 36.2%

Foul line Albany 35-44 79.5% Maine 18-29 67%

3 point shooting Maine 6-22 for 27.3% Albany 7 for 17 41.2%

Maine take 22 of 56 FGA's as 3's for 39.7% of FGA's as 3's
Albany takes 17 of 58 FGA's as 3's for 29.3% of FGA's as 3's

Turnovers: Maine 12 Albany 9

Rebounds Albany 43 Maine 38

Assists Maine 14 Albany 13

Leading scorers Albany Cremo 22 Nichols 17
Leading scorers Maine Calixe 16, Evans 14 and Fleming 12

Terrible first half for Maine as they shoot just 10% 1 for 10 for 3's and 10% for FG%.

Poor defense allowing Albany to dominate offensively giving up 48 first half points and only scoring 10 themselves. Hard to tell which was the worse Maine's defense or Offense or lack there of both.

Poorest and lowest half of scoring in the last 3 plus years and probably as far back as I can remember which might have been in the 50's.

Maine did outscore Albany 56 to 38 but the game was over at half-time and Albany just went thru the motions in the second half and Maine scored a lot against Albany's subs.

Maine falls to 4-15 overall, 2-15 vs. D-1 competition and 1-3 in conference play while Albany goes to 14-5 and 2-2 in conference play.

Maiane's next game gets even tougher as the travel to Burlington to visit the Vermont Catamounts the best team in the conference on Martin Luther king Day on Monday January 15 at 7:00pm.

First-half blitz carries UAlbany past UMaine men’s basketball team

...“I can’t explain it,” said Maihe coach Bob Walsh, whose team fell to 4-15 overall, 1-3 in conference with another huge challenge at reigning America East champion Vermont on Monday. “If I could explain it I think we’d be able to figure it out. We couldn’t guard them and we couldn’t put the ball in the hoop to save our lives. We’ve got to find a way to dig ourselves out of it when things aren’t going our way.”

Being just as qualified as others to comment from behind a keyboard, I was one of the 143 people at the Cross Center Saturday to watch the Maine men and their lackluster display.

Remember Ilija Stojiljkovic was benched for the majority of the 1st half after picking up a technical foul for throwing a shoulder into Joe Cremo early in the game. Now he wasn't going to be a 38 point difference maker, but he would have helped.

Bright spots :

Celio Araujo - the kid is tough, he defends well, he runs the offense, doesn't look to take ill advised shots, just goes to work and plays. I don't know why he doesn't play more.

Danny Evans - Evans came in and made a difference, he scored, he defended, he had energy, he passed the ball, he rebounded. He is all effort all the time. I don't know why he doesn't play more.

Miks Antoms - He actually is developing, had a soft touch on one hoop along the baseline, went after rebounds. He's not a big minute guy at this point, but you can see his improvement. I just wish he had this year to redshirt like the 6'10" and 6'8" Aussie's for Albany. But with the injury to Vincent Eze we don't have that luxury.

Andrew Fleming - In the 2nd half he really played well, a lot of energy, he attacked the rim on the offensive end, and he hit the defensive glass. (sure it was against the Albany bench for the most part, but he looked good in the last 20 minutes)

Less than Bright Spots:

Andrew Fleming - In the first half he was pouting, and in a bad mood, and his play was reflective of that. So soft. Not sure how you get him to keep his head in the game.

Ilker Er - A guy that can score, who has proven he can score, just stands in the corner and waves for the ball and when it doesn't come he doesn't work to get in a spot to get it on offense. And when he touches it, the ball is going up, and right now it's not going in. He needs to get something right in the gym.

Vernon Lowndes, Jr. - 2 minutes of playing time, the exact same amount as Garvey Melmed and less points. Why isn't he playing? He looks the part, and when he gets some court time he seems to be able to handle his own.

Dennis Ashley - he must work hard in practice, and I've seen him make shots, but why is he getting 19 minutes of playing time? He's not that good, he can't defend, he doesn't rebound, and he was 1 for 6. Get him off the floor.

Coaches - I don't understand the substitution patterns or lineups they put on the floor. Why would Maine roll out Araujo, Calixte, Ashley at the same time? Why not try a bigger lineup of Evans, Lowndes Jr, and White in their backcourt together? Why did they wait so long to call a timeout in the 1st half? 13-3 before the media timeout, 18-3 and another time out and the game was over. Their decisions baffle me.
