Maine Men's Basketball set for First Conference Home Game

BANGOR, MAINE (WABI) - How good is the UMaine men’s basketball team? After the first half of the season, it's usually still hard to know. Conference games have begun and the Black Bear team has one win and one loss.

Calixte at the center of Maine's solid start to AE play
... The red shirt junior and Co-America East Player of the Week exploded in the second half of Saturdays 76-73 win over Binghamton scoring 15 points.

The black bears top offensive weapon is averaging 15 points per game this year.

He attributes his heightened level of play to his work during the offseason.

"You know just staying in the gym working on every part of my game, my jump shot, free throw shooting, my ball handling, watching film. Its just good to see my hard work, that everything is paying off. I'm excited to see what the new season holds for us," Calixte said.

UMaine men hope to build on encouraging conference start

...UMaine scored a 76-73 win at Binghamton on Saturday after a heartbreaking 71-70 loss at Stony Brook on Thursday when the Bears rallied from a 20-point second-half deficit to take the lead in the final 20 seconds only to lose on UC Iroegbu’s 3-pointer with 4.2 seconds left.

“It was great to get a win against Binghamton especially after what we went through at Stony Brook, a game we really thought we should have won,” said Walsh. “We showed a ton of resilience and character and heart, and it was really important for our guys to understand that they’re good enough to win.

“It’s hard to keep learning lessons from tough losses. It would feel a little better to be 2-0, but it’s better than 0-2.”

Maine Returns Home to Face UMBC on Wednesday Night

...THE SERIES: The Retrievers lead the all-time series against Maine, 17-13. UMBC has won six straight matchups, with Maine last earning a victory in an 83-80 win at the Cross Insurance Center on Feb. 1, 2014. In that matchup, four Black Bears reached double-figures in scoring, with Xavier Pollard and Zarko Valjarevic each totaling 18 points. Maine held a 56-36 at the half, but UMBC stormed back into the game by outscoring the Black Bears 44-27 in the second half.

A LOOK AT UMBC: Winners of six of its last nine games, UMBC enters Wednesday's contest off a 71-56 loss against the defending America East champion Vermont last Saturday. The Catamounts held Jarius Lyles, the America East's leading scorer (20.3 ppg.), to just eight points (2-12 FG) in 38 minutes on the floor. K.J. Maura recorded 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while Arkel Lamar added 15 points in the loss to Vermont. The Retrievers won their America East opener against New Hampshire, overcoming a 36-31 halftime deficit to win 71-67. UMBC excels from the 3-point range (See below), and also leads the America East in steals and assists. Maura averages 5.6 assists per game, while Lyles earns 1.8 steals per contest.

LIVIN' BY THE THREE: UMBC and Maine love to shoot from long distance, with the Retrievers (10th nationally) and Black Bears (33rd nationally) leading the America East in 3-point field goal attempts. UMBC leads the nation in 3-point field goals per game, with 12 per contest, while Maine counters with the second best 3-point field defense in the conference (79th nationally). The Black Bears have only allowed opponents to shoot 32.3 percent from beyond the arc this season

Tom: Maine has been in every conference game so far but have Albany on Saturday. Maine was 7 for 22 for threes for
31.8% and UMBC was 7 for 26 for 26.9%.

Maine took 23 3 attempts out of 62 FGA's for 37.3% of FGA's as 3.s For UMBC they took 26 three attempts out of 57 for 45.6%.

Improvement in 3 point shooting percentage as they were 29.8% coming into the game and also improved in % of FGA's as threes coming into the game was 44.1%.

Turnovers Maine 19 UMBC 15.

Assist Maine 9 of 23 FGM and UMBC 8 of 26 FGM not very good for either team, too much 1 on 1.

Foul shooting Maine 14-18 77.8% and still lost and UMBC 17-29 58.6% and still won.

Calixe had 24 and Fleming had 14.

Lyle had 16, Sherburne 15, Maura 12 and Akin 11 for UMBC.

Maine falls to 1-2 in the conference and 2-14 against D-1 opponents. UMBC goes to 2-1 in conference action.

Mane plays home Saturday against Albany at high noon.

Game was poorly played by both teams before an even poorer attendance. which was 906, but that includes season ticket holders and free tickets given out that were no shows.

TOM: BUT MAINE IS ONLY SHOOTING 29.9% FOR 3's AFTER TONIGHT'S LOSS TO UMBC. The opponents defense against Maine's 3 % is better than Maine's 31.0% against their opponents.

Maine has taken 42.2% of their DGA's as 3'sand their opponents have taken 39.5% of their FGA's as 3 attempts.

Both are low % wise and high for 3 attempts of their G's.

BOTH MAINE AND THEIR OPPONENTS ARE 'LIVING AND DYING BY THE THREE".
