Holway's hot streak propelling Maine men's hockey

...In the absence of Rob Michel on the blue line Holway has picked up the slack in a big way and is enjoying the best offensive spurt of his career.

Despite the sudden outburst, Holway says he hasn't changed anything and is sticking to the basics.

"I've really just been trying to keep things simple, not over complicate my play. So you know my team's been doing a great job around me, we've just been playing well," Holway said.

UMaine hockey defenseman nears return from injury

...“I’m pushing to get back this weekend but, if not, maybe for Monday’s game at Brown,” said Michel on Wednesday. “I don’t want to rush back and hurt it and be out for the season. It’s getting stronger every day. I’ve had a lot of rehab. I’m definitely headed in the right direction.”

Michel had three goals (two on the power play) and five assists through 15 games. He injured his knee when he was checked into the boards.

“I went into the boards funny,” explained Michel. “When it first happened, it was definitely painful. I ended up having it checked out and it wasn’t as bad as we had thought. That’s always good.”

Transfer Tim Doherty boosting UMaine hockey team

...Doherty shares the team’s scoring lead of 15 points (seven goals and eight assists) with Mitch Fossier (6-9-15). His recent efforts earned him Hockey East Rookie of the Month for December.

A 22-year-old rookie?

Doherty left Brown after only two months of his freshman year – for reasons he keeps to himself – and returned to junior hockey. He enrolled at Maine in the fall of 2016. Academically, Doherty is a sophomore but, in terms of athletic eligibility, he’s a freshman.

“We’ll have him for three more years,” said Gendron, who savors the idea of an experienced, heady player. “He’s really smart. A lot of hockey sense. He is always learning.”

Sophomore defenseman playing important role in UMaine’s unbeaten streak

...Holway has five goals and nine assists in 15 games (0.93 ppg). After missing the first three games due to injury, he notched a goal and two assists in a 6-3 win over Miami of Ohio in his season debut on Oct. 21.

“He has very good puck skills and pretty good hockey sense,” said UMaine head coach Red Gendron. “He has more experience now and that has slowed the game down for him. He has learned when to get rid of the puck quickly and when he can hang onto it a little bit longer.”

Holway said having a year under his belt has definitely played a part in his success.
