Hope we don't have to discuss this issue much further because I think not only has it run its course, but neither one of us know why the school doesn't do what you're advocating ... or, even, if it does so currently or has done so in the past.

I will say this, though. There's nothing wrong with playing a couple of guarantee games annually. You want to raise funds?
How about this:
During the 2012 season (a Maine athletic budget report that's available on line), Maine played at Boston College and received $300K for the pleasure.
That same year, the 2012-13 academic year, the men's basketball team played three guarantee games for a total of $245K.

Just about every ... if not every single one ... of schools on the low or mid-major level of D1 basketball play these so-called "guarantee" games.
Going out of their way to play teams against which they're going to lose .... it's a way of life.
It's easy money. One phone call to schedule the game, and the result is almost pure profit.
Why give that up?

Terry Holland is going to be 76 in a little over three months. You think he wants to undertake the full-time fund-raising role at Maine that you advocate? You think he'd even consider moving to Maine and have to deal with brutal winters, lack of cultural activities (in a relative sense), etc., etc.?

Again, this isn't worth discussing, particularly when we don't know if Maine is already doing this, or has tried.

And, I'll fall back on my argument that any fund-raising done should support the school has a whole, rather than the athletic department.

Terry Holland will not be the Fund Raiser. He was the architech building the ESU program.
No at 76 he is entitled to take a break, but certainly he can serve as an advisor to Creech
and exchange ideas with him. I hope he does.

I want to drop it as well. When UMAINE dropped the JV program in late December of 1978 all 12 of
us agreed to take each others name.

Perhaps the 12 of us should set up a fund for MAINE ATHLETICS call the 12 Fund....

I will discuss this with them.

But at this point I no longer wish to discuss this either.

Yeah, your 12 JV teammates ... I'm sure the financial commitment would just turn around the Maine program!

Seriously, every little bit helps. Let us know about the results of the contributions that are eventually made by the "12 Fund."

Your efforts will be appreciated.

Have enough trouble keeping up with all your inane, convoluted and usually long-winded misguided views of the basketball world, 55.

Some of the other names you've mention at least have some perspective about college hoops. Unfortunately, you have none.

I think Maine loses to Columbia that may be it for Walsh.

basketball_guy: Toss up game vs. Columbia. Game will be decided by how well Maine shoots or does not shoot the three. Currently shooting just 29.6% from beyond the arc and taking 44.4% of their FGA's as 3's. Last two games they are 11-52 for just 21.2% taking 41.6% of their FGA's as 3's.

Sorry, but I doubt it very much if a loss to Columbia will make any difference in Walsh's future.. Men's basketball just isn't that important to the powers-to-be at UMaine. Earliest announcement will probably be after their probable quarter-final loss in America L'east tourney in early March.
