UMaine women's basketball team stops BC 61-40 with defense

Postby bcbc55 » Thu Dec 28, 2017 9:21 pm

Leading BC 29-20 at the half the Blackbears out scored BC 24 to 6 in the third period to take a commanding 53-26 lead that led to a 61-40 win over the Atlantic Coast Conference member BC.

Maine started out 3 for 3 from beyond the arc and then cooled off as they went 3 for 16 for the rest of the game to finish 6 for 19 for 32% to BC who shot just 3 for 12 for 25%. Maine shot 21 of 56 from the floor for 37.2% while BC was held to 16 for 54 for 29.7%. From the line Maine was 13 for 22 for 59% and BC went 5 for 9 for 55%.
Maine went 15 for 37 for 2 pointers for 40.3% and BC was held too 13 for 42 for 31%.

While Maine did not have a great night shooting it was their tough hard nosed person-to-person defense that stymied the Eagles as they had to work very hard to get off a good shot before the 30 second shot clock expired on each of their offensive possessions.

Maine had 13 assists on their 21 made FG's. BC had just 6 assists on their 16 baskets made. Maine out rebounded BC 43-35. Maine had 14 turnovers and forced BC into 21. Maine had 10 steals, BC had 6.

Blanca Millan paced Maine with 18 points and 7 rebounds, Julie Brosseau had 14 with 4 threes and Tanesha Sutton jut missed a double double with 9 points and 11 rebounds.

Emma Guy with 13 points and 14 rebounds was the only Eagle in double figures.

Going into the game tonight Maine was taking 43.8% of their fGA's as 3's, but tonite they only took 33.7% of their FGA's as 3's on 19 of 56, especially seeing that they had hit their first 3 consecutive 3's to start the game as they just went 3 for 16 for the remainder of the game. Maine had better patience in the half court and got good high percentage 2's from their offense. Maine scored 22 points in the paint, 18 points from threes and got to the line for 22 foul shots making 13 because they got the ball inside more than usual which was good to see. They also posted up the 5'10" Sutton which helped the offense in the half-court.

Maine moves to 7-6 overall and 5-6 against D-1 teams while BC falls to 5-8.

With the win Maine moves up from 67th to the 58th ranked team in the country in team PI in the realtimerpi.com team RPI of the 349 D-1 teams tonight. Maine also still has the 13th SOS (strenth of schedule) in the country

Maine's next game will be next Wednesday January 2nd, when the host Stonybrook at the CIC in Bangor for the opening of America L'east conference play.

... “That’s what you have to do if you want to be a great team,” said Vachon. “We’ve had games in which we’ve been leading by 10 but we’ve let the other team back into the game. We want to really put our foot on the gas and we did that in the third quarter.”

She said the dominating third-quarter showing “came from our defense” as they were able to convert turnovers into points.

UMaine came up with 14 steals in the game.

“I was proud of them,” said Vachon, who added that she wasn’t surprised by her team’s performance.

“We’re battle-tested. We’ve played the best of the best,” said Vachon, whose Black Bears have lost to No. 5 Mississippi State, No. 12 Ohio State and No. 14 Duke.

Here we go again with bcbc55's views on the number of 3-point shots teams take.

The Maine women "only" took 19 3's in its lopsided victory over Boston College.

Could that just possibly be that BC is an inferior opponent? Or, that BC doesn't have good post defenders?

Much easier to get inside vs. an inferior opponent and get good close-range shots vs. teams that don't defend well and don't have real good post players.

Your relentless attacks on bcbc ? You are now getting more, even Way More, annoying than he was (before I blocked his posts).

M19 - give it a rest and challenge yourself to just respond to the basics of UMaine Athletics, and not to Coach C. specifically, otherwise you become ..... ????? ("that guy" .... Ughhh). ;) :o :D
