At that level, no one will play a diamond and one...too many good athletes and players.

bulldog: You may be correct But I have always been unorthodox It is a good junk defense if you really know how to play it correctly. No 1 they won't be prepared for it, 2. it puts the pressure on the other players to beat you and 3. if Young is taking anything he wants then the others are not prepared to carry the load when asked to. It is one thing to get their shots when Young is hot But when the pressure is on them to make them when Young is off then the rim gets smaller and the ball gets bigger.

Be darned if I am going to let one face the basket player beat me. Double team him when he has to ball to force him to give it up and then deny over play him so he has to go back door to try to get it back where you are protected by the defenders at the back of the diamond.

Lon Kruger, who I think knows what he is doing, said that Trae Young, the best player in college, has free reign to shoot when and where he sees fit. I don't know if this debunks the whole theory of structure ruling the day or not, but it's an example, in 2018 , of a talented player being given the freedom to let it fly. Seems to be working in this case however.

thebam: Will it win a national Championship or get even to the final four with a player who has free reign to shoot.

What happens when a team if they are smart(although not many are) enough to go Diamond and one on Young and take him out of the offense. Will he still keep shooting or will the other four players on the florr be able to pick up the slack?

Well, he's leading the entire nation in scoring AND assists per game . This OU team is absolutely a contender to go to the Final 4.

He is Lonzo Ball with a jump shot and quickness.
No "junk" defense is going to contain him.
He's so good that he'd find open teammates for easy shots.
The players on his team are more than capable of making shots that become easier when an opponent overly concentrates on Young.

Specialty defenses like a diamond-and-one have easily exploitable flaws.
H.S. teams, which is 55's experience, might not be able to exploit the flaws, might not have enough good players on the court to find the holes in junk D's.

At the high-major level of college basketball? The holes are easily found and exploited. There's a reason why D1 teams rarely, if ever, play "junk" defenses.

MJ; Maybe his assistant coaches can talk Walsh into advertising for a shooting coach and a 3 point methods consultant to improve the methods that they use to get their 3's and the poor shooting techniques they use in shooting their 3' son his next BLOG.

Especially for a 3 point shooting coach as they are only shooting 29% from beyond the arc, but are taking 480 of their total 1114 FGA's as three point attempts which is 43.0% of their FGA's as 3 point attempts.'

P.S. It wouldn't hurt the women's team either as they are not much better in shooting just over 30% for threes and taking 41.8% if their FGA's as threes.

Also, a 3 point methods consultant that knows about the 12 methods of how to get threes, which includes the 6 best highest % ones and the 6 lowest % ones.

If both teams hired the needed help they could split the costs.

Today the men went 6-22 for threes for 27.3% and took 22 of their FGA's as 3's out of 56 FGA's for 39.3%. The women
also today went 3 for 17 from beyond the arc for 17% and are taking 41.8% of their FGA's as 3's for the year.

Looks like UMaine men and women teams will continue to "live and die by the three" in conference play. They have lived once and died three times in conference play, lived 4 times and died 15 times overall and have lived twice and died 15 times vs. D-1 competition. They have died almost 5 times more than they lived this season, "Living and dying by the 3.

I guess after 15 men's deaths and 8 women deaths you would think that maybe, just maybe, the 2 head coaches and 6 assistant coaches should have figured it out by now as their overuse and abuse and how they get the threes off are killing both UMaine basketball teams.

The women have split their lives and deaths in conference play 9 lives and 8 deaths overall and 7 lives and 8 deaths against D-1 teams.

Letting the players decide who shoots the 3, when they shoot the 3, where they shoot the 3 from and how they get the three is doing the same thing over and over and over again for 3 plus years expecting different results has not worked in leading to different results considering their 3 plus years W-L record is currently 22-89 19.8% overall and 14-89 08.6% against D-1 competition for the men.

This is the first year since Sigi Koizar has played that the women's team has lived and die by the three so much shooting just 30.9% this year and taking 41.8% of their FGA's as 3's this year.
