McVicar Making her Presence Felt With UMaine Women's Basketball Team

ORONO, MAINE (WABI) - From being a recruited walk-on to playing division one basketball is hard. But, it’s possible to make it. Maddy McVicar, of Calais, is proof of that.

Final: Maine 64 - Stonybrook 56.

More of a nail-biter than I was hoping to see, but we'll take the W.

That Johnson girl from Stonybrook is deadly from the 3. Five 3-pointers and 19 points total. She'll definitely play a huge factor in their offense this year. Seems she is a DII transfer, first year playing for Stonybrook. A really nice pick-up for them.

Big takeaways from the game...

-I've said it before, but it is sometimes easy to take Tanesha's positive impact on the game for granted. It seems whenever she's in foul trouble (even if she's not always our highest scorer), we struggle a bit to find our offense. We NEED her to stay out of foul trouble for some of the big upcoming conference games. Her presence on the court is so, so important.

-Having said that... it was really nice to see Maeve Carroll step up when Tanesha was in foul trouble. Carroll played a crucial role in Maine's strong Q3. She ended the game with 9 rebounds, 6 points, 4 assists, and 2 steals - probably her best all-around game to date. She's still young in many ways, but I hope we continue to see her grow into a truly consistent impact player.

-This is going to be an interesting conference season. I really think we're going to see some very close games - these are definitely winnable games, but Maine will have to play hard and not underestimate any of these teams. Hartford dominated with a 70-55 win over Albany tonight. And UMBC nearly upset UNH (score was 28-19 in UMBC's favor at the half), before UNH came back with a strong 4th quarter to win by 5. Should be a fun Binghamton game on Saturday!
