Any Confirmation?

Postby Linguist » Mon Dec 11, 2017 7:20 am

Does anyone have any information regarding the mystery man Lynn Coutts (Senior Associate Director of Athletics) escorted into the Cross Insurance Center for Friday night's game? He was there with a briefcase and was taking notes during the game, sitting directly across from the Maine bench.

I heard rumblings he was supposed to be around all weekend and be at the game against UM Machias Sunday too.

Anyone know anything?

Does this mean that the UMaine's athletic department can't evaluate the men's basketball program?

Look at the record for the past 3 plus seasons. 20-82 and 8 of those wins were probably over in state D-3, NAIA2 or USCAA teams?

Even as a MBR novice can figure out that when you add in the 11 transfers the past 2 seasons and losing a couple of assistant coaches that something may need to happen..

Add in, not giving Ryan Bernstein a scholarship for this coming season. He certainly earned one for his dedicated hard work last year as a walk on and he is better than the scholarshipped small JUCO transfer guard that is starting for Maine now. That certainly wasn't a positive move.

Also, losing Wes Myers by not wanting him back, when they would have probably taken Pirovic back if he hadn't transferred out to Canada for his senior year.

Where those 2 decisions fair?.

Doesn't it take two to make a fight?

Negative things have certainly started piling up not just the winning percentage of 19.6% of 20-82 against all opponents and just 11.8% versus D-1 opponents subtracting the probably 8 - 2 a year non D-1 wins which makes it 12-82 seeing that wins over non D-11 do not count towards the 68 D-1 teams RPI's that are used to select and seed the teams for the NCAA's March "Big Dance". By the way UMaine is currently 335th in the Pomeroy RPI 351 Team Rankings. The America East Confrence in which Maine plays in is ranked 28th of 32 D-1 conferences in the realtimerpi.com RPI Conference rankings.

However, I really do enjoy Walsh's BLOGS. I find them very timely, interesting, informative, relative, and well written, especially when they are his own BLOGS. I really do look forward to reading them.

If he could get his players to play as well as he BLOGS they would be a very good team.

P.S. Maybe the guy with the brief case and taking notes was just at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor to evaluate the officials.

Anyone know if he stayed for the UMaine @ Machias game on Sunday to evaluate those officials too. Walsh does a lot of officiating during games maybe he was evaluating his officiating too during both games.

A little further info.

It seems as though this person was brought in to evaluate the men's program only and was talking to people near the program during the weekend.

Here is the interesting tidbit, Coach Walsh brought in this consultant/evaluator. This was his idea.

That begs the question is he building a case to defend himself if he gets fired? Will he try to show the University doesn't support the program and he's doing the best he can with what he has for resources?

Linquist: Thanks for the info. I believe it is a little too late. This should have been done at the end of the second year 2015-16 when they were 11-49 and lost 6 players via transfers.

It is not that the University does not support men's basketball. I don't think blaming his bosses is going to help his cause if that is going to be his defense. Doing this will not help him for future head jobs to blame the university.

Still say he has to go 8-8 in conference play and win a tourney game even to be considered of being rehired.

When you have speculation like this it usually means something will happen sooner than later. I wonder if he survives January, but if he does then he probably survives this season.

But once Season ends he is gone for sure...this has been like four years of basketball with a Coach who really does not belong Coaching a Division 1 program. I think he makes a great Division 3 Coach but that is where he really belongs.

Wish him the best when the time comes and wish him a fond farewell but I believe it is time for this guy to move on.

basketball_guy: Too bad this evaluation wasn't done after his second season 2015-16 when they were 11-49 (3-27 and 8-22) and had 6 players transfer out and then 5 transfer out after the 2016-17 season. Too little too late.

UMaine is a tough place to coach D-1 basketball. History tells you that as only 2 coaches since 1949 have winning career percentages and thise were in the .500 percentage range. It is all about location, Location, Location.

Tough to get good players to come north to Maine and the state does not produce many D-1 prospects on a yearly basis and when it does they head south.

Wish him well when he leaves and I am certain he can get a good D-3 coaching job. Coaching D-1 is not for everyone.

I have really enjoyed reading his BLOGs as they are interesting, timely, informative, relative and valuable to the coaching of any sport at any level.
