Black Bears Travel to Quinnipiac for Sunday Afternoon Tilt

ORONO, Maine -- After a tough loss to Patriot League preseason-runner up Boston University on Wednesday, the Maine Black Bears hit the road on Sunday to face Quinnipiac. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. at TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. The Black Bear-Bobcat matchup will be broadcasted live on ESPN 3.

WATCH | LISTEN | LIVE STATS | GAME NOTES

LAST TIME OUT: Aaron Calixte led the way with a game-high 22 points but Boston University used a late first half run to distance itself, ultimately taking the 78-69 victory over the Black Bears on Wednesday afternoon. Calixte was joined in double-figures by Andrew Fleming, who was able to record his fourth career double-double after recording 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Trae Bryant who finished with a career-high 11.

SERIES HISTORY: The Black Bears and Bobcats will meet for the 10th time on Sunday, with Quinnipiac holding a 6-3 advantage in the all-time series. The two squads met last season on December 18, 2016 with Quinnipiac taking home an 85-75 victory at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. The two schools first met in the 2007-08 season, and have played each other each season since excluding the 2011-12 slate. Maine last defeated Quinnipiac in the 2015-16 season, when the Black Bears triumphed 98-95 in overtime at the Cross Insurance Center. Maine shot 56.1 percent (37-for-66) from the floor and converted all nine attempts from the charity-stripe in overtime to capture the win.

CALIXTE'S BIG DAY: Redshirt Junior Aaron Calixte put up season-high 22 points against Boston University on Wednesday, and has increased his point total in each of his last three games. Calixte missed all but five games last season, as his 22 points mark his most points in a game since he drained 23 points in a 105-100 win at Hartford on January 27, 2016. The 22-point outburst against the Terriers marked his third game of his career of eclipsing the 20-point mark, as he tallied 22 against Brown at the Cross Insurance Center on January 2, 2016.

A LOOK AT QUINNIPIAC: After a 78-77 win in first year head coach Baker Dunleavy's first game on November 11, the Bobcats hit a four-game skid against Brown (79-72), Colorado (70-69), Wake Forrest (72-55), and Liberty (84-72). Quinnipiac has three scorers averaging over double-figures in points in Cameron Young (16.4 ppg), Chaise Daniels (14.4 ppg) and Rich Kelly (10.8 ppg), with Young (6.8 rpg) and Daniels (5.3 rpg) averaging over five boards per game.

Good win! Nice to see Vernon get off the bench and into the flow of the game. I think that performance will earn him rotation minutes in the next game. We all know Coach Walsh needs to see the same consistent effort from him on the practice floor as well.

Still need to clean up the turnovers!! Calixte with 6 and Evans with 5. The lost possessions almost cost them this game and certainly cost them the BU game.

Antoms beginning to earn more time. He has to be better than 1-6 from the line though. Yikes!

If they can stay within 20 of Georgetown, that would be an accomplishment.

Maine men's basketball's confidence renewed after QU win

..."In the second half, we turned the ball over a ton when they put the pressure on us, but a lot of guys stepped up to make plays," head coach Bob Walsh said. "It's good to get a little bit of a reward for the work that we've put in."

Maine held off a late run by the Bobcats to win 78-72, earning its first win of the year. The team got a perfect outing en route to 20 points from guard Vernon Lowndes Jr., alongside 18 from leading scorer Aaron Calixte. But while Maine flourished from the field, it is also reminded that hasn't always been the case this year, and it things could go either way on any given outing.

"You know, we've struggled enough offensively where all they have to do is show them the overall stats and the shooting percentages and say, 'guys, we can't get too full of ourselves,'" Walsh said.

"Hopefully we relax a little bit. Hopefully it makes us hungrier. We understand what we're capable of, and it gives us confidence moving forward."
