Harasymiak: "These are our guys" three years into building program

ORONO - It is no secret the Maine football offseason has been difficult for those in Orono.

Following a decimating last-second loss to close the season, the Black Bears learned they would be losing FCS-leading rusher Josh Mack to transfer. In addition to that, offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who helped revitalize the Black Bears offense, is moving to coach at Holy Cross.

Black Bears hire offensive coordinator from within
Brian Picucci will call the plays for the Black Bears next fall after coaching the offensive linemen last fall.

...Picucci, a 46-year-old native of Leominster, Massachusetts, was the offensive line coach last fall. He was formerly the offensive coordinator at the University of Massachusetts from 2009-12.

“I’m just excited knowing how knowledgeable Brian is,” said Harasymiak, UMaine’s head football coach. “I’ve had a lot of football conversations with him. He’ll be different from Liam. We’ll see what he brings to the table in terms of schemes and attack.

“But we’ve got a guy who’s proved himself and has done it and his football mind is very high.”

Harasymiak, who is entering his third year at Maine, said he offered Picucci the position the day after Coen left for Holy Cross. “It was a no-brainer for me, an easy promotion,” said Harasymiak.

...The program announced offensive line coach Brian Picucci would be promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach ahead of next season. Sliding into his former role will be former tight ends coach Pat Denecke. Both men came to the university in 2016, becoming important parts to Joe Harasymiak's rookie coaching staff.
