WBB vs Bryant University W 70-68 OT, vs Ft Kent W 100-40

Postby bcbc55 » Sun Nov 12, 2017 9:19 pm

The UMaine women's basketball teams 2 opponents this coming week are both 0-2.

On Tuesday, November 14th they host the D-1 Bryant College women who have lost to Boston College 65-42 and Brown University 85-62 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor at 7:00pm.

On Thursday, November 16th at 7:00pm they host the UMFK Bengals at the Cross Insurance Center who have lost to the University of Massachusetts on the road 111-45 and to the University of Maine at Augusta 74-70 at home. UMFK plays at the 7th level of the 10 college basketball divisions which is 4 levels below D-3.

These should be two wins for the Black Bears coming off their 1-1 record in their own Tip Off Tournament this past weekend. Losing to Tulane 42-34 on Friday and beating Harvard 76-51 in the consolation game on Saturday.

However, getting 2 wins depends on which way the Bears played the past weekend going 3-23 for threes against Tulane and then hitting 13-30 threes against Harvard.

For both games they shot 16 of 53 for 3's for 30.2%.

From the floor they were 14 for 53 for the Tulane loss and 28 for 63 in the win over Harvard.

For both games they shot 42 for 116 for 36.2% for both games.

From the line they were 3-7 vs. Tulane and 7-8 against Harvard for 10-15 for 66.7% for both games.

Glad to see the two wins here. It will indeed be interesting to see how the team looks when up against some really, REALLY good teams in the next few weeks. As I've noted before, things may start to get a bit messy as this newbie-heavy squad comes up against what are (literally) some of the best teams in the country, but I'm hoping that a) folks here can keep perspective through the inevitable bumps that we're going to see, and b) the team grows from these experiences on both ends of the court.

Positives from the last couple of games IMO:

-It was nice seeing the team being able to close out a close game vs. Bryant, as it seems this has been something that has been a struggle at times over the last few seasons.
-Glad to see everyone getting double-digit minutes and making contributions in the UMFK game. Yes, it was a blowout (as expected), but at least it allowed some of our newer kids to get minutes in a real game setting and hopefully get some of the early-season nerves out of their system.
-I'm liking what I'm seeing with Maeve Carroll, especially in the last few minutes of the Bryant game (huge steal at the end to prevent Bryant from getting that last shot). She seems like she could be a tough cookie, and I wouldn't be surprised to see her playing time continually increase in the next few months.
-I've said it before, but *holy cow* to Blanca right now. If she can keep this momentum and consistency up (even if her shooting percentage drops a bit!), she can easily be one of the best players in the America East. Love that she's not just a one-trick pony and that she is contributing significantly in almost every area.

And so that I'm not accused of having my glasses be too rose-colored... yes, it would be great to see some increased contributions from our bigs. As I said before, at this point in the year, I think it makes sense to try to figure out what lineups work and to give the new kids a chance to learn the offense, etc., and I'm NOT of the opinion that we need to always play our biggest players if they are not who it makes sense to play. It's still early in the season, so hoping to see some further development in this area, even if Maine does still end up using more guard-heavy lineups most nights.

mainah57: Maine women's current wins are over 0-3 Bryant ranked 305in the realtimerpi.com RPI rankings and over Harvard 2-2 ranked 181. Maine is 2-1 and ranked 216. The win over UMFK does not count in the RPI rankings only D-1 opponents

There are 351 D-1 colleges.

They do have a tough schedule coming up. In order of the games
opponent...............W-L.......RPI
U of Miami..............2-1.......178
Kennsaw State.........0-4........196
Toledo...................1-1........73
Ohio State..............,4-1........76
Maine Maritime Academy doesn't count
Mississippi State........3-0...... .70
Duke......................2-1.......194
Boston College..........2-2.......134

Then goes into AE Conference schedule.

Right now AE Conference is ranked 23rd out of the 33 D-01 Colleges in RPI

mainah57...Agreed about Carroll. She's really showing some Liz Wood-like qualities which is a good thing. This recruiting class is looking better & better with each game. I wonder if Barron played any part in their recruitment or is this group is mostly hand-picked by Vachon? If the staff can develop Barra & Williams so that they are solid contributors by their sophomore season...this could turn into a top notch class! Even Fogarty can play an important role as a designated shooter in key situations.

I'm a bit surprised by Wadling's struggles this season. Hopefully, she will get into a groove and the offense will come around. She is still struggling a bit with conditioning IMO. She certainly seems engaged in the games and a positive teammate. They need her to improve for the team to improve!

mainejeff... I actually agree completely here on both points. Definitely seeing flashes of Liz Wood qualities in Carroll, and if that can be developed into consistent output each game, it will be a much-needed asset to the team.

Also agree re: Wadling. She was looking great towards the end of the season (especially March) last year - hoping we can see her return to at least that level of contribution. There are times where I feel like the decisions she's making on the court (e.g. committing fouls away from the ball at key moments, the shots she chooses to take, etc.) could be improved - it could be a combination of nerves, or just the fact that she's still only had one full season under her belt, or trying to force certain things - but hoping that she can hit her stride again come conference time, if not sooner. If we can be getting solid minutes from her each game, while the rest of our post players continue to develop and provide relief for her off-the-bench, that will be huge. I also agree that I think she seems like a great team player and hard worker, so I'm sure she's eager to get back into her rhythm as well.
