Evans among returning Black Bears looking to make impact

...Evans came to UMaine last season, and averaged four points per game alongside one assist per contest. He spent the summer playing for England's U-20 national squad, something head coach Bob Walsh said aided Evans' maturity as a player.

"You can tell his confidence is really up," Walsh said. "He's one of our best competitors, he does so many things to help you out on the floor. He's a guy we're really going to count on a lot this year."

Although Evans scored just seven points across the two exhibition games, he feels 2017-2018 may be the year he can make an impact for the Black Bears.

A back door cut is such an unselfish play. Great cut by Rob Birstonas leads to 3 points for the team.

Maine men's basketball ready to compete ahead of opener

...It has become the buzzword over the past three years in Orono, and a message all Black Bears are expected to adhere to: if you compete, you have a chance to win. Remedial perhaps, but a necessary notion as a team like the Black Bears looks to prove its relevance in as a program.

"The mentality, the approach that we've taken has been really good, but you've got to go out on the court and prove it," Walsh said regarding the preseason. "And we have a lot to prove when we play those 40 minutes between the lines."

Maine will test itself with two tough matchups to start the year, going on the road against Boston College and Texas Tech.

Revamped men’s basketball roster faces crossroads season at UMaine

ORONO, Maine — After a 2016-2017 campaign that began with myriad injuries and included a well-publicized altercation, the University of Maine men’s basketball team is seeking a new beginning this winter.

Eight of the 17 players on the roster are first-time Black Bears, a ninth will be seeing his first UMaine action after sitting out last year as a transfer and two others are back after suffering season-ending injuries last winter.

Several others have transferred out of the program, including last year’s leading scorer, guard Wes Myers, whose season ended prematurely after a Valentine’s Day locker room incident in which he broke a teammate’s jaw with a punch. Myers is playing as a graduate transfer at South Carolina, a Final Four team last April.

“In a lot of ways because of what we’ve gone through with the personnel issues and the transfers, this feels like a first year with a lot of new guys,” said fourth-year UMaine coach Bob Walsh, who admits he must have patience.

Maine hopes culture change can bring success

But it's not a stretch to say a culture change was needed in the locker room for the men's team.

Last year the Black Bears limped to the finish line.

Dealing with injuries and suspensions to key players, including leading scorer Wes Myers.

But Maine brings in a plethora of new talent and multiple players tell ABC 7 and FOX 22 the morale and comradarie in the locker room is the best it's been in a while.

Head coach Bob Walsh said the team is buying into the preached winning mentality.

"The guys are taking what we're trying to teach, they're working on it. They're improving each day. There's a response to everything we do that's been really mature, whether things have been good or bad. And I like to see that," Walsh said.
