Despite revamped roster, Maine confident ahead of season debut

ORONO - Maine women's basketball is just a few days away from its first game action.

The Black Bears have lost in the America East title game the past two seasons, needless to say Maine is eager to get back on the court.

A return to the championship game won't come easy though. 2017-2018 features a revamped roster for the with several key pieces gone from last years team.

Looking forward to following along with the Stonehill game, even if I can't be there in person. Hoping that some of you all who will be at the CIC can give us a post-game recap here of how the team is looking!

Of the newbies, I'm particularly interested in seeing Dor Saar (will she end up playing that more "pure" point guard role?) and Kat Williams (height isn't everything, but at 6'5, it's at least one thing that will be working in her favor...).

And I really think Blanca could be a force to be reckoned with this season - when she was "on" last year, she was outstanding. If we can get that happening in every game (or even in most games), it will be HUGE for Maine. It's nice to see a player who is equally impressive on both the offensive and defensive sides.

I expect to see Fanny, Tanesha, and Julie making key contributions this year too. And even KJ could end up playing an important role, as one of Maine's few seasoned bigs. Who knows, we may even see Parise getting some actual minutes this year...

I wouldn't be surprised to see it to take a little while for the group to get their new rhythm figured out, but they clearly have potential to do some great things.

UMaine women’s basketball team deals with adversity, eager to play exhibition

...Sutton, a junior guard, said she said the mass defection was a surprise but added that the team has handled the adversity well.

“We have five great incoming players and they look good. We’re just moving forward as a team,” said Sutton, who led the team in rebounds (164) and assists (88). She averaged 4.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists and was the team’s fourth-leading scorer (7.4 points per game).

“It was definitely unexpected,” said senior forward Johnson. “However, our team has come together. Everything happens for a reason. We’re here and we’re ready. It is what it is.

“The people who decided to stay here want to be here. And we want that attitude,” said Johnson. “We’re excited for the freshmen as well. They’ve come in and we’ve had three great weeks of practice.”
