Women’s Cross Country Drops Dual Meet to Army West Point in First Meet of 2017

Orono, Maine – The University of Maine women's cross country team kicked off its 2017 season at home on Friday afternoon, falling to Army West Point by a score of 17-44. Junior Haley Lawrence finished in fourth-place with a time of 19:02.1, a team best on the 5.12 kilometer course.

Junior Kaitlin Sautler crossed the finish line in Harold Alfond Sports Stadium with a time of 19:10.5, good enough for seventh place. In her first race as a Black Bear, freshman Emma Jourdain finished just outside the top-10 with a time off 19:38.

Senior Nora Hubbell started her final season as a Black Bear with a time 19.47.1, while Hope Gardner and Cassandra wrapped up the top-20 with times of 20:13.9 and 20:14.6, respectively.

Maine returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 9 when they travel to the UMass to compete in the Minuteman Invitational. The women's race is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. in Amherst, Mass.

Men’s Cross Country Falls to Army West Point in 2017 Opener

Orono, Maine -- Junior Aaron Willingham finished in third-place with a team-best time of 25:24.3 in the first dual meet of the 2017 season, but the University of Maine men's cross country team fell to Army West Point 18-43 on Friday afternoon.

Sophomore Jacob Terry and junior Josh Horne also placed in the top-10 on the day, as Terry finished with a time of 25:53.5 for eighth place, while Horne finished directly after with a time of 25:54.9

Simon Powida ran a time of 26:14.2 for 11th place in the five-mile course, and teammate Daniel Lesko followed in 12th place with a time of 26:16.7. Freshman John Hasset placed 14th with a time of 26:24.3 in his first collegiate meet, while senior Logan Moses kicked off his final season as a Black Bear with a time of 26:35.6

Colin Tardiff finished the Orono course with a time of 26:41.5, while Zachary Lepage crossed the finish line with a time of 28:29.2

The Black Bears return to action on Saturday, Sept. 9 when the team travels to UMass to compete in the Minuteman Invitational. The men's race is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. in Amherst, Mass.

Women’s Cross Country Competes at Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown

BOSTON -- The University of Maine women's cross country team competed at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown on Friday afternoon, hosted by Boston College.

Kaitlyn Sautler was Maine's top runner of the day, finishing the 5k course at Franklin Park in 18:58. Reigning America East Performer of the Week Haley Lawrence crossed the finish line next for the Black Bears with a time of 19:08 for 128th place overall.

Freshman Emma Jourdain finished her first Battle in Beantown event in a time of 19:36, good enough for an average mile of 6:19. Nora Hubbell, Cassandra Howard, Hope Gardner, Ahlin Sungsuwan and Faith Gardner, also competed on Friday.

The women's race featured 188 total runners from 22 colleges. Providence won the event, with Indiana finishing as the runner-up. Georgetown, Dartmouth, and Cornell rounded out the top five teams on the day.

The Black Bears will have a bye week next weekend. Maine returns to action on October 7th at the New England Championships in Boston.

Maine places 15th at Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown

BOSTON – Led by Aaron Willingham's 42nd place finish, the Maine Black Bears men's cross country team competed at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown, hosted by Boston College.

Willingham crossed the finish line in 25:17, averaging a 5:06 mile. Daniel Lesko also finished within the top-100 runners, placing 98th with a time 26:02. Simon Powhida finished just three seconds later, for 102nd place.

Senior Logan Moses ran a time of 26:49 on the day, while freshman John Hassett finished his first Battle in Beantown race with a time of 27:02.

156 total runners ran the 8 kilometer course from 18 different schools. Syracuse took home the crown, while Illinois took second place. Indiana, Brown, and Boston University round out the top five teams.

Maine will have a week off before heading back to Boston on October 7th to race in the New England Championships.
