Conference Call: NBA Draft top prospects and sleepers

The NBA Draft is less than a week away. as the future of the game is prepared to take the next step to stardom.

During this week’s conference rundown, we lay out the top NBA prospect from each power conference and also take a stab at a prospect that remains more of a second round draft selection but could blossom into a productive professional ballplayer in a few years.

ACC
TOP PICK
Jayson Tatum
Small forward

The third-ranked prospect in the 2016 class, Jayson Tatum is expected to become the next Coach K product to be selected in the lottery. Quite possibly the most polished scorer in this year’s draft, Tatum will be fending off Florida State’s Jon Isaac to be the first player to be selected from an ACC league member. A 6-foot-8 wing/forward who is a major matchup issue in the frontcourt, Tatum is a practical lock to average over 15 points per game during various seasons of his NBA career.

I hope the rumors are true and the C's trade the #1 to Philly, get their 3rd pick this year and their 1st next year. Fultz is a great player but not head and shoulders above the rest and if they plan on keeping Thomas around it makes a lot of sense. Draft Jackson, pick up Haywood in the off season coupled with high draft picks next year (Brooklyn and Philly) and they should be very good for the next 4-5-6 years. Enough to over take Cleveland? That's a different conversation.

Celtics reportedly deal top pick to Sixers

The Celtics agreed to terms with Philadelphia last night on a trade that will send the No. 1 overall pick in Thursday’s NBA draft to the Sixers in exchange for this year’s third overall pick and a protected 2018 Lakers first-round pick.

A team source confirmed a report by The Vertical that the Celtics will get that Lakers’ pick if it falls in the top five, but not if it is the top pick. If the pick drops below No. 5, the Celtics instead can claim rights to a 2019 Sacramento first-round pick also controlled by Philadelphia.

The deal was completed yesterday when Markelle Fultz passed his physical at the Sixers training facility in Camden, N.J. Both sides will announce the trade tomorrow.

The Celtics, who reportedly are equally enamored with two forwards in this year’s draft, Kansas’ Josh Jackson and Duke’s Jayson Tatum, are still attempting to schedule workouts. Jackson thus far has refused to work out for the Celtics, though he has visited twice with the Lakers, who own the second overall pick.

Kind of hard to figure what Ainge is really up to with this trade. He must feel that the Number One pick this year is not that much better than the third pic in the first round. Perhaps he figured it was best to make a deal now, figuring that next years NBA draft would be a much better than this years draft.

I guess that is what they pay him for.

basketball__guy: I believe that the Celtics feel they don't need guards, they need more in the front court. Look for them to take 6'8" forward Josh Jackson, Kansas with that 3rd pick they traded for with the 76ers.

They now have 7 first round picks for the next 3 years along with the first pick next year. Although hard to pass on point guard Fultz who is a Brad Stevens type of player.

Stevens has turned the C's into the Eastern Conference version of the San Antonio Spurs. They draft, trade for and sign players in the following order. first, type of high character human being, 2. Coachable with high Basketball IQ's, Third Basketball skills and 4th and last athleticism.

The Celtics are the first NBA team to follow the Spurs way of doing things and it certainly has been successful.

Just shows how a college coach can be real successful using the same philosophy in the NBA as he did in the NCAA.

Have to give Danny Ainge the credit and smarts to hire Brad Stevens 4 years ago after his great NCAA final four runs 2 years in a row with Butler.
