Former UMaine defensive lineman earns Ravens roster spot

...“Ricard was one of the surprises of training camp for his ability as a two-way player. The Ravens gave him a shot at fullback and he played well enough that the team decided not to carry a traditional fullback on the active roster,” Garrett Downing wrote in a baltimoreravens.com report.

“He also blocked a field goal against the Saints and earned a spot despite the defensive line group being perhaps the deepest (position) on the team,” he added.

Dustin Cox also praised Ricard in an ebonybird.com report before the roster cuts were announced on Saturday.

“What can’t this guy do?” wrote Cox. “He has lined up on the defensive line, at fullback and even at tight end. Ricard was already a favorite of the undrafted rookies to make the team but he solidified his spot with a strong performance against the Saints.

Trevor Bates signed to Patriots practice squad
The Westbrook native and former UMaine player rejoins New England's practice squad after being cut by the team on Saturday.

...Bates, a 24-year-old linebacker, was cut Saturday when the Patriots got down to a 53-man roster for Thursday’s season opener against Kansas City at Gillette Stadium.

Bates was a member of the Patriots’ practice squad late last season and earned a Super Bowl ring after New England defeated Atlanta in February. Days after the game, the Patriots signed Bates to a $465,000 contract for the 2017 season.

Twice last season, he was named the Patriots’ Practice Player of the Week, and he had his weekly salary increased from $6,900 to $18,000.

Former UMaine women’s hoop star breaks Labor Day 5-miler course record

The Bangor Labor Day 5-mile road race celebrated its 55th birthday on a crisp, cool Monday morning in record-breaking fashion.

Tracy Guerrette, a former University of Maine women’s basketball standout, broke a course record that had stood for 13 years.

The native of St. Agatha covered the 5 miles starting from Geaghan’s Pub, around Bangor’s West side, and finishing at the Bangor Parks and Recreation building in 29-minutes flat, 23 seconds faster than the standard Cassie Hintz established in 2004.

Patriots cut former UMaine defensive end Trevor Bates from practice squad

FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts - Not even 48 hours after being signed to the New England Patriots practice squad, Trevor Bates finds himself on the open market once more.

Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal was first to report Tuesday the Pats cut ties with the former University of Maine defensive lineman, doing so in order to make room for for guard Willie Beavers. The Patriots had cut Bates Saturday, but then brought him back the next day after he cleared waivers without being claimed by another squad.

Former UMaine basketball player Tracy Guerrette finds success pounding pavement

There was a time when Tracy Guerrette wasn’t too fond of running.

When the St. Agatha native played basketball at the University of Maine, she dreaded a preseason workout through which coach Joanne P. McCallie and then Sharon Versyp put the Black Bears.

“We used to have to do a preseason workout of a mile and a half [run] and a five-mile run, and all of us would hate it,” Guerrette said. “We’d complain and say we’re not track athletes, we’re basketball players.”
