Colby has championship connection behind bench
Assistant coach Mike Latendresse was a freshman when UMaine won the Division I hockey title in 1993.

...There are similarities between the two championship runs, Maine’s in 1993 and Colby’s this month. And if anyone would recognize a resemblance, it would be Mules assistant coach Mike Latendresse.

“I was just talking to (head coach Blaise MacDonald) about it the other day,” said Latendresse, now 47, who was a freshman on the Black Bears’ first national championship team in 1993. “We had a great head coach in Shawn Walsh, and I think we have a great head coach now in Blaise. The players, too. We had the ability to score a crazy amount of goals back in the day, we could do a lot of damage. In a similar way, I think we have that with the Mules, too. And there’s the similarity in goaltenders. Mike Dunham and Garth Snow both went on the play in the NHL, and Sean Lawrence is playing so well right now. We had a defensive corps that was solid, and that’s what we have now.

“This run here has really brought back a lot of memories for me.”

Former UMaine football teammates now next-level rivals in CFL

ORONO, Maine — They were teammates at the University of Maine and now they are friendly rivals in the Canadian Football League.

And when receiver Damarr Aultman runs a pass route for the Hamilton Tiger Cats against the Ottawa Redblacks, one of the defensive backs who could be covering him is his friend and former Black Bears teammate Sherrod Baltimore.

“It was a great sight to see … someone I consider a brother of mine on the same field, sharing the same passion,” Aultman said last week at UMaine’s Pro Day. “It’s all love off the field. But, on the field, it’s all business. He knows that and I know that.”

The hockey dream lives on for Greg Moore — Lisbon native, former St. Dom's, UMaine star

...Greg Moore is still living the hockey life.

The sport has taken him from Lisbon, Maine, to Michigan, to Orono, Maine, to Germany, and several points in between — and beyond. It has given him a couple of sips of the NHL, gold medals, and the chance to play for a team called Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg.

Moore, who turned 34 last week, is back in Michigan — again — as an assistant coach for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program’s U17 team.

“I just love the sport,” he said. “I wanted to stay in it and be a part of it. I just love the game of hockey and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else outside of the sport when I was done playing.”

Jamil Demby works out for two NFL teams in Vineland

...The 6-foot-5, 335-pound Demby is the No. 18 ranked offensive tackle in the draft according to WalterFootball.com, which predicts he will get drafted anywhere from the fourth to sixth round.

"He's the total package," Russo said of his former player. "He can do everything they are asking him to do. They are telling him to be ready to play center, guard and tackle."

Russo said Demby is handling the pressure of obtaining a job in the NFL like he was already there.

"He's handling it like a professional," Russo said. "He's a mature kid, very humble. He's just appreciative for the opportunity he has before him."
