Maine native Mulligan works and waits for next NFL opportunity

...While Mulligan, who has been with 10 NFL organizations since 2008 and played in eight games for the Detroit Lions last fall, is unsigned as the new season enters its first weekend, football remains his profession as he continues workouts in case another opportunity arises.

“I’ll stay in shape for this year, for sure, and wait and see if anybody will eventually pull the trigger,” said Mulligan. “We’ve spoken to multiple teams and they’re all interested. They all want to know if I’m in shape, but right now they’re giving what they have a try.

“They said in the next few weeks or so they’d have more of an idea where they want to go with me.”

Former UMaine linebacker making solid transition to pro football

...Tshimanga is one of four former Black Bears in the CFL. The others are Ottawa backup quarterback Dan Collins and defensive back Sherrod Baltimore and Hamilton wide receiver Damarr Aultman.

“I’ve been happy and the coaches have been happy with me,” Tshimanga said. “Obviously, you always want to do better. It has been a lot of learning and (gaining) experience. It’s been fun.”

He said the game is quicker than it was in college and he has had to make the transition.

“Your reaction time has to be a little faster, but I think I’ve adjusted pretty well so far,” Tshimanga, who plays on all the special teams and started several games at linebacker because of a rash of injuries sustained by the Eskimos, said.

Former UMaine goaltender excited about joining another new team

Ben Bishop is playing for his third National Hockey League team in nine months, but the former University of Maine goalie doesn’t mind.

Bishop was traded by Tampa Bay to Los Angeles in February and the Kings turned around in May and dealt him to Dallas. He was going to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Dallas, which signed him to a six-year, $29.5 million contract, opens the season on Friday night against the first-year Las Vegas franchise.

Flynn to be inducted into UMaine football ring of honor

ORONO, Maine — Former University of Maine offensive lineman Mike Flynn, who went on to have an 11-year career in the National Football League, will be inducted into the school’s prestigious football Ring of Honor on Saturday when the Black Bears host Rhode Island at Morse Field

Flynn, who played for UMaine from 1992 to 1996, was an offensive guard and tackle for the Black Bears. Following his stint at UMaine, Flynn moved on to a successful NFL career highlighted by a Super Bowl championship in 2001 with the Baltimore Ravens

“I am excited and humbled to be inducted into the Ring of Honor,” Flynn said. “UMaine has a rich history of great football teams and players. I am so proud I was able to be a part of it. I would like to thank the committee for selecting me. I know it was a difficult process because of other worthy players. As an athlete, to be recognized as one of the best to play at a university is what we strive for. This induction is certainly one of the highlights of my career.”
