UMaine submits bid to host 2018 America East baseball tourney

... Jared Hager, director of strategic media for America East, explained that there is a bid process and one of the criteria is that the facility must have lights because the six-team, double-elimination tournament often has three games in a day.

There are only three lighted baseball fields in America East: UMaine’s Mahaney Diamond, LeLacheur Park and Binghamton University’s Bearcats Sports Complex in Vestal, New York.

Binghamton has also submitted a bid and UMass Lowell was expected to submit one. League athletic directors will choose the site at their annual meeting in June.

They will also decide on a tournament format as UMass Lowell gives the league seven postseason-eligible teams. America East now uses a six-team tourney, with the top two seeds earning first-round byes.

Unfortunately America East isn't known for being " fair" or rational in these decisions, but if they were .. Lowell would be out as they have held this tournament for 5 years already. Binghamton held it in 2010. Maine hasn't hosted it since 2002, despite having , arguably, the best facility in the conference. So, if you are fair and rational, Maine should host this tournament in 2018. Good luck with that.
As far as the format? No brainer. Continue with the 6 team format. 7th place doesn't participate.

Another "Bingo !" for the bam. Heck, Maine should get to host for 2018 thru 2022 !! At least there wouldn't be weather issues in mid-May any more so than further south (like Vestal this past weekend ? Great ground crew efforts tho).

Well, maybe not quite a no brainer ?

How about ya actually reward the top-teams ? Start with 5th v. 7th and 4th v. 6th, and the two winners then play, before ya start a four team tourney 4-5 days later (so the team that survives gets to rest their pitching staff) ? Or, just screw this PC poop where everybody gets in, and just go with top-4, or maybe an initial 4/5 play-in game at most !!!
