Five CAA Teams In Preseason Top-25 List

Athlon Sports FCS Preseason Poll

RICHMOND, Va. (June 6, 2017) – Riding the momentum from last season’s national championship, CAA Football is expected to be strong once again in 2017 as five teams are ranked in the Athlon Sports FCS Preseason Top 25 poll.

Defending national champion James Madison (14-1) headlines the group of CAA teams at No. 2. The Dukes trail only North Dakota State, a team they defeated 27-17 in the semifinals of the playoffs a year ago, in the preseason rankings.

Richmond (10-4) is ranked No. 7 in the poll. The Spiders, who begin their first season under head coach Russ Huesman, have made three consecutive playoff appearances and advanced to the quarterfinals in 2016.

Villanova (9-4) checks in right behind Richmond at No. 8. Long-time assistant Mark Ferrante takes over for legendary head coach Andy Talley and will be looking to guide the Wildcats to a seventh trip to the playoffs in 10 years.

Perennial power New Hampshire (8-5) opens the season at No. 11 in the Athlon poll. The Wildcats are looking to extend their record of 13 consecutive FCS playoff appearances.

North Dakota State and James Madison, winners of the past six FCS national titles, could vie for another this fall

Here is Athlon’s projected top 25 teams in the FCS, with where teams might finish after the national championship on Jan. 6:

11. New Hampshire
(8-5, 6-2 CAA)
A season opener against archrival Maine could jump-start the Wildcats to a 14th straight playoff appearance under coach Sean McDonnell. They need steadier play out of junior quarterback Trevor Knight, who has excellent wide receivers in Malik Love and Neil O’Connor. The future is now in the secondary with sophomores Pop Lacey and Prince Smith Jr., last year’s CAA Defensive Rookie of the Year.
