Maine Men's Hoops Reportedly Hires Bob Simon as Assistant Coach, O'Brien Leaving Program

...Matt O'brien is leaving the program. We spoke to him today and on the phone and he says he’s leaving for George Washington where he'll be the Associate Director for the School of Business. We wish him well.

There is reportedly a change in men’s basketball operations as well but nothing official from the school yet.

O'Brien, Barrett departing Maine men's basketball staff

..."It's an opportunity to get development experience. Where I want my future to go professionally, I need to have development experience," he said. O'Brien added he would love to be an athletics administrator down the line, and the development experience would be necessary for a position in that arena.

O'Brien has known Maine men's basketball head coach Bob Walsh for 15 years, and previously served on his staff at Rhode Island College. He said Walsh was on-board with him pursuing opportunities to further his career, and that he was thankful for the support he received.

"I enjoyed working for him for the second time around," O'Brien said. "The players I got the chance to coach were terrific. That's the hardest part in leaving the kids. That's not an easy thing to replace personally."

Top UMaine assistant takes non-basketball job at George Washington

...“But I was ready for a new challenge.”

Walsh is entering the fourth and final year of his initial coaching contract with UMaine coming off a 7-25 campaign last winter. There are no assurances that he would receive an extension, but O’Brien said that was not a primary factor in his decision to change not only jobs but career paths.

“I’ve got a ton of belief and faith in what coach Walsh does and how he does it and the future of the program,” he said. “I’ve had some concerns with how the university views the basketball program, but internally within the basketball program I have 100 percent belief in what’s being done and how it’s being done.”

Walsh said he didn’t know if his contract situation played into O’Brien’s decision.

If Coach gets 11 or 12 wins, or finishes top tier vs. bottom tier in conference, he gets a two year extension. Orono's hockey program is number one concern as no longer relevant at regional or national level. Amy 1st year. Football student conduct another concern. Locker room fist fight on men's team another issue that must not reoccur. Baseball 2nd tier in conference. They have many issues with fielding competitive programs. Coach Walsh is a quality coach and as stated, progress this season gets him 2 years. Repeat of last season would be problematic.
