The University of Minnesota-Duluth, the No. 2 seed for the NCAA hockey tournament that begins this weekend, is among the University of Maine’s non-conference opponents for the 2017-2018 season.

Scott Sandelin’s Bulldogs, 25-6-7 and the National Collegiate Hockey Conference tournament champions, invade Alfond Arena Oct. 27-28 for a two-game set.

The Black Bears also are scheduled to host Miami University (Ohio) of the NCHC on Oct. 20 and 21 and visit Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Oct. 13-14) and Quinnipiac (Dec. 8-9) of the ECAC.

Maine hockey associate head coach Jay Leach resigns

ORONO - Maine men's hockey will be be dealing with a coaching transition of sorts, as associate head coach Jay Leach has decided to resign.

Leach wraps up his second four-year stint in Orono, first serving on Shawn Walsh's staff in the late 1980s, then returning after Red Gendron was hired in 2013.

Between those two stays, Leach spent time coaching at several levels of hockey. Most notably, he coached more than a decade in the NHL, including time with the Kings, Thrashers, Devils, and Capitals.

UMaine associate men’s hockey coach Jay Leach resigns

... Leach earned $91,800 per year and Gendron said he doesn’t have “any immediate plans” pertaining to who will replace him. Former UMaine goalie Alfie Michaud was the first-year volunteer goaltending coach this past season and could be a candidate to become a full-time paid assistant.

Leach, a Lexington, Massachusetts native who played his college hockey at the University of New Haven, left UMaine after the 1987-88 season to become an assistant with the NHL’s Hartford Whalers. He would later serve as an NHL assistant with Los Angeles, Atlanta, New Jersey and Washington.

He was also a head coach in the American Hockey League, guiding Springfield and Hershey to divisional championships and Springfield to the Calder Cup finals.
