Coach Gendron on UMaine men’s hockey team: ‘We will not finish 10th or 11th’

... Defiant fifth-year UMaine head coach Red Gendron said the polls are wrong.

“I guarantee that we will not finish 10th or 11th. I guarantee you that,” said Gendron emphatically on Tuesday.

He said he understands why his team was picked where it was.

“We haven’t been winning,” said Gendron. “It is what it is.”

All 11 teams qualify for the Hockey East playoffs.

UMaine has finished 11th the last two seasons with identical 5-15-2 league records. Hockey East was a 12-team league but lost Notre Dame, which has joined the Big Ten.

Hockey East poll of coaches picks UMaine to finish in last place
The Black Bears begin play Sunday with a home exhibition game.

...Gendron, whose contract runs through the 2018-19 season, is counting on his rebuilding efforts to show fruit this year.

This is the first time the entire roster contains players he recruited.

“Our junior and senior class have some pretty good players – pretty good players ready to take on bigger roles,” Gendron said. “Obviously last year’s freshman class was one of the most productive in the country.

“We believe as a coaching staff that this year’s freshman class is every bit as good as the one (last year).”

Freshmen accounted for 36 goals last year, or 35 percent of Maine’s production.

Depth, competitive drive crucial for UMaine men's hockey in 2017-2018

..."We're going to use it as fuel to the fire this year," senior forward Nolan Vesey said Thursday. "We're going to prove all those coaches wrong. We don't care what they think of us, and all that matters is how we feel in the locker room, and we're pretty confident."

How confident exactly?

"It just makes it more fun when we're laughing at the end," sophomore forward Mitchell Fossier said.

UMaine hockey team confident goaltending will be a strength

...But University of Maine freshman goaltender and Anchorage native Jeremy Swayman is just where he wants to be and he is hoping to lead the Black Bears to a dramatic turnaround.

Swayman, who was chosen in the fourth round of the National Hockey League draft by the Boston Bruins in June, will vie for the UMaine starting job with junior Rob McGovern, who posted a 9-15-3 record, a 2.99 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage in 29 games last season.

Sophomore Stephen Mundinger, who appeared in three games last year, is also in the picture.

McGovern and Mundinger have not been drafted.

UMaine men’s hockey hosts Acadia in Sunday exhibition game

If the University of Maine men’s hockey team is going to make significant inroads after three straight losing seasons, it is going to have to receive immediate contributions from among its 13 newcomers.

That process begins Sunday at 4 p.m. when the Black Bears play their only exhibition game against Acadia University of Wolfville, Nova Scotia, at Alfond Arena in Orono.

The Axemen are a worthy opponent since they reached the Cavendish Farms University Cup Final Four last season, losing 3-0 to eventual national champion the University of New Brunswick in the semifinals.
