Maine men's ice hockey prepares for series with Miami

...The first hurdle for the Black Bears will be before the lights come on at Alfond Arena Friday night.

"We had pretty tough practices on Friday and Saturday and we laid out the practices to sort of simulate a game so that we didn't lose a step as if we took the weekend completely off so I think that helped us," defenseman Mark Hamilton said.

While the Black Bears displayed many positives against the Huskies they also revealed their flaws.

UMaine checking line center seeking turnaround season

... “Not letting the other team’s top lines score is a big responsibility but it’s something we understand and take a lot of pride in,” said Lacroix.

The Lacroix line used its size, strength and physicality to sustain the forecheck in both UConn games.

Lacroix is 6-foot-1, 183 pounds while sophomore Housakos is 6-2, 187 and junior Perez is 6-4, 205.

“Our game plan is to get the puck deep and work on the grind,” said Lacroix. “We did a good job of that. We kept moving forward and we kept things simple. It’s tough to score if you’re (pinned) in your own zone. The best defense is a good offense.”

Miami outlasts UMaine men’s hockey team

...The Black Bears showed resiliency in the third period as they outshot Miami 12-3 and clawed their way back into it. But Miami hung on for the triumph.

“We didn’t skate in the first two periods,” said UMaine head coach Red Gendron. “We took penalties that were unnecessary and that caused us a problem. We didn’t manage the puck well and that caused us a problem.”

He was pleased that his team fought back in the third period but termed it nothing more than a “consolation prize and we don’t play for that.”

Miami coach Enrico Blasi thought his team showed progress from their first two games.

“They’ve gotten better. They did a lot of good things. And Maine did a lot of good things. It was a really exciting college hockey game,” said Blasi. “This is a tough place to play.”

I was not at the game last night.
Just looking at the box score, Red did not pull McGovern until after the 2nd period and after giving up 6 goals. Can anyone explain why he waited so long? Was his defense hanging him out to dry? Was it just a case of Miami on the power play?
