Gendron embraced former players, but looking forward to his system in 2017

...That's not to say they weren't embraced as his own, of course.

"First of all, let me say this," he said Thursday. "They're my guys. Our staff has brought them in. But at no time did we make the other players feel like they were somebody else's guys. And I think that's pretty important."

While several players like Devin Shore, Blaine Byron, Cam Brown and others would see individual success, the Black Bears largely struggled. But this year will mark the first where all four classes were brought to campus by Gendron and his staff, an opportunity to have their own system fully put in place. That gives Maine an opportunity to not reflect, but instead, look forward to 2017-2018.

New players strong in UMaine hockey’s exhibition win over Acadia

ORONO, Maine —- Nine newcomers made their University of Maine men’s hockey debuts in an exhibition game against Acadia University of Wolfville, Nova Scotia Sunday afternoon and most of them turned in impressive performances in the Black Bears’ 3-1 triumph.

Left wing Tim Doherty, who sat out last season after transferring from Brown University in Rhode Island, had a goal and an assist; freshman defenseman Alexis Binner scored a power- play goal off assists from fellow freshmen Brady Keeper and Adrian Holesinksky and freshman goalie Jeremy Swayman stopped 14 of 15 shots including a breakaway.

“Several of them played really well. In fact, I don’t think any of them played poorly,” said fifth-year UMaine head coach Red Gendron. “They brought different elements to the game. It was a good debut for our freshmen.”

Numbers don’t lie: UMaine men’s hockey team must show improvement

...For example, there is UMaine’s 11-38-4 record in its last 53 games against Hockey East opponents.

Or there is the 0-12-4 road record last season that left the Black Bears as the only Division I program that did not win a single road game. UMaine is winless in its last 22 road games (0-18-4) dating back to a 5-4 win at Massachusetts on Jan. 30, 2016.

UMaine finished 52nd among 60 teams last season in goals-against average (3.47) after ranking 50th in 2015-2016 (3.39) and 51st in 2014-2015 (3.26).

The Black Bears have endured three consecutive 20-loss seasons, going 33-67-13 in that span including 11-21-4 a year ago. They haven’t made it to the Hockey East semifinals since 2011-2012. They have missed the NCAA tournament nine of the last 10 years after a string of nine consecutive trips.

Maine ice hockey set to host UConn in season opener

ORONO - After taking care of Acadia in its exhibition game, Maine men's hockey is ready to kick off the season against UConn.

The Black Bears have all sorts of questions heading into the game whether it's in the crease or trying to find the right group of forwards.

Despite the question marks, Maine is confident heading into the series and thinks it can win and claim some precious Hockey East points early on
