2017-18 Maine Men's Hockey

Postby Priceless » Wed Mar 08, 2017 5:31 am

The new season will kick off Oct 6 and 7 against Hockey East opponent UConn in Alfond Arena. The Hockey East schedule will feature two games versus each of the other 10 teams, plus four games against two other league rivals. It is not known how these opponents are chosen or who they'll be.

There will be 10 non-conference games. Two series at Alfond have been confirmed. Miami will be visiting for the first time since the Dexter Classic in 1993. The other series is the University of Minnesota-Duluth, currently the #2 team in the nation. It will be the first trip to Orono for the Bulldogs since 1988. We also know the Friendship Four second game will be against Colgate or RPI. Those are the confirmed games, however based on previous schedules the other five games can be assumed. The annual non-conference game against UNH will be at Portland this season. The remaining series should be weekends at RPI and Quinnipiac.

With luck the extra HEA games will be winnable games against UMass and Merrimack, not Providence or Boston College.

Great schedule but it's hard to get excited about this program these days.

How many years are left on Red's contract?

So, let's say we get rid of Red, or don't renew his contract when it's up. How do you reckon we will attract top coaching talent to the University of Maine? We only pay Red around 200k. Jerry York makes 800K. Even if a coach wants 300k, I bet we say no.

Two more years on Red's contract.

It's a tough spot. Maine doesn't have the money to pay more. It also doesn't have the money to sink into the program and potential coaches and recruits know that. If this year is bad and shows no sign of improvement then what do Kreech and Hunter do? If they fire Red, they have to pay him the remaining year plus hire a new coach. Giving him an extension isn't an attractive option but the program absolutely positively cannot have a lame duck head coach.

Actually, it absolutely positively can, and should probably go that route, and probably will. At least I think so, and current situation(s) would support this.
Doesn't really matter right now, ... perhaps (= probably ?) next year around this time it will.

I agree with TAL on this one. Lame duck is the way to go just like they are going to do with Walsh. If you aren't winning then you don't deserve an extension!!! Yes, it could hurt recruiting for 1 year but big deal at this point. I'd rather be more secure in knowing the right decision was made regarding the coach. At this rate Red will have a decade under his belt, won absolutely nothing and UM will have forked over $2 million!
