Maine Men's Bball Suspends 4 Players

Postby Blind Zebra » Wed Feb 15, 2017 9:20 pm

4 Maine Men's Basketball players have been suspended from the team. Wes Myers, Ilija Stojilikovic, Marco Pirovic and Jaquan McKennon did not appear in tonight's game against UNH. Coach Walsh said "the players did not live up to the standards of our program". More to come on this one. Stay tuned...
Maine has 8 healthy bodies, 4 of which are walk ons.
Only 4 players scored in tonight's 64-51 loss at UNH, with the 3 freshmen in double figures.

BZ: Why were Meyers and Er not starting after the Duke game in which they scored 15 Meyers and 20 Er in first half for 35 of Maine's 55 points?

This program is in big time trouble. 4 transfers last spring injuries galore and now 4 suspensions of players who get double figure minutes and when they played UNH the first time at home they lost 74-63 with the 4 suspended players playing. They lose on the road without the 4 suspended players and only lose 64-51.

Could there be possibly more transfers this coming spring.

Meyers is trapped unless he goes D-2 so he can play immediately as the only eligibility he has left is the remainder of this year and next year. Can't transfer to another D-1 as he would have to sit out again as he had to sit out last year because of his transferring to Maine from Niagra. unless he could get a special exception from the NCAA.

Calixe is a junior and will get this year back because of the injury sit out. Soph I.S. has 2 years left. If Bernstein is on scholarship then he has 2 years left and Ashley has 3 years left as he red-shirted last year but he is a walk on.

The 3 freshmen and the 3 juco's could transfer and the frosh Evans and Fleming would still have 3 years left. Red shirt freshmen Eze would lose another year if he transferred as he has already used up a year for red shirting last season. 2 of the juco's Er and Howard would have one year each left and McKennon would have 2 years left. Er might be able to get this year back because of his injury but it occurred in the 11th game and usually unless you get a special NCAA injury exception as the injury rule is usually 7 games to get the year back.

With Walsh's 4 year contract if Maine let him go this year his 3rd how much would it cost Maine to do that buyout?

Maine will have 3 scholarships available next year as Pirovic is a senior and that is if Beal and Reid-Knight don't return after sitting out this year because of injuries.

D.M the transfer from LaSalle has 3 years left, but if he transfers again he is down to 2 years. Melmad and Ward are walkons. I think that is 17 players, have I left any players out?

What do you think about this post BZ as I respect your D-1 college opinion a great deal?

Like to read your response to the possible transfer situations.

It's bizarre how Walsh has gone from successful and seemingly well liked D-3 coach to a total dumpster fire at Maine. In trying to figure out what has gone wrong I come up with 2 possible reasons:

1. At Maine he has been forced to go after players that can play at the D-1 level regardless of their character flaws compared to D-3 where he could be more picky.

2. The pressure of winning in D-1 has turned him into a tyrant & the players are tuning him out & revolting.

I'm leaning more toward #2. Losing is not fun & it has to be getting to everyone associated with this program.

I don't think that this thing can be turned around at this point. Word gets out in recruiting circles and Walsh at Maine is toast in this regard.

Agree with the above post. Seems like the happiness has been sucked out of this program. I maintain that Walsh must be able to coach - he won 200+ games as at the D3 level. He just doesn't have the horses right now. And the blame for that has to fall at his desk, right? Imagine this starting 5:

Aaron Calixte
Wes Meyers
Isaac Vann
Andrew Fleming
Devine EKe
(Kevin Little -instant offense off the bench)

That's a team that could compete for 15-20 wins with Maine's schedule.

Always "fun" to see those who really don't know, or have much specific info., head into La-La land with their speculation, convinced they "probably" (or absolutely in Bob's case) have it all figured out.

Looks like the Frosh stepped up just fine, and they played UNH about the same as they did previously with the 4 now-missing dbl.-digit minute guys. Not much difference between an 11-pt loss in the latter, and a 13-pt loss last nite.  :o

As a season ticket holder, it's hard to go to these games. Why am I here? Plus, it's almost impossible to give your ticket(s) away. People just look at you when you invite them...like, geez, what did I do to you? There's certainly no magic, no excitement. Walsh yelling, "(Name), you've got to do better." So do you, Bob, way better. Can't see fans wanting to give him another 2-3 years to turn around the present mess. Going to be a lot of folks not renewing. Not only is the MBB program continuing to be a bummer; it's becoming a financial liability.

You're really grasping here, Mr. Trump. Most would agree that this program has been a trainwreck under Walsh. I'm just trying to figure out why and offering some possible reasons. C'mon man.... :|

Now THAT was Very Reasonable and Very Well-Said Crunch-man ! Obviously "interested" enuf in the program to purchase season tickets (and tough enuf to come on here and acknowledge it !?), and yet still able to simply express your disappointment, dissatisfaction, frustration (and dis----) in a reasonable manner.

Now THESE are the fans and program supporters that UMaine, and specifically AD Creech, need to be really, Really, REALLY !!!!! concerned about letting down so miserably that they lose 'em (despite current weather, that ice has now melted to barely an inch, and about to crack wide open), and They Won't Return Easily nor anytime soon !!!
A Giant Uh-Oh !!!!! :o

Not the messenger necessarily, but certainly on the tone, basis, and personal perspective and knowledge base of the "messenger, and in "some" cases obvious prior bias and agenda(s).
Just sayin' ...... Crunch delivered his message in a way that makes it worth reading and ........ IMNSHO. ;) :)
