Windjammer soccer standout Messer to play for UMaine Black Bears
Camden Hills senior signs national letter of intent to join Orono-based Division I program

ROCKPORT — One of the most accomplished high school girls soccer players in Midcoast history has decided to keep her incredible talents at the next level relatively close to home — namely, about 70 miles up Route 1 and 95 in Orono — to play for the University of Maine.

Camden Hills Regional High School senior Charlotte Messer signed a national letter of intent to play college soccer for the Black Bears, the mascot of the only Division I college in the state, on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 1 at a ceremony at her school.

"Making it official was symbolic of me reaching my goals so it was a very happy moment for me," said the 18-year-old Messer. "Signing the national letter of intent and declaring my commitment was a feeling of pure excitement. I'm very proud and very ready for what's to come."

Maine soccer expects parity in America East

ORONO - Maine soccer head coach Scott Atherley knows no matter what your non-conference slate looks like in America East women's soccer, it often can be inconsequential to what is to follow.

"You attack it day by day, and you try not to get too far ahead of yourself," Atherley said Monday, admitting that can be a challenge at times.

The reason he is looking ahead? The Black Bears released their 2017 schedule Monday, opening up Aug. 20 against LIU Brooklyn in Orono. Their first road contest will be Aug. 25 against Brown, and will also host UMass Sept. 3 at Thornton Academy in Saco. The non-conference slate wraps up Sept. 16 at Cornell, before America East play gets underway Sept. 24 against Stony Brook.

UMaine soccer looks to replace Vivien Beil with balanced squad

ORONO - Vivien Beil became a force in her first two seasons in Orono on the pitch. The 2015 America East Rookie of the Year was a dynamic presence, posing as a credible scoring threat who could help the Black Bears at any moment's notice, especially on a young team.

But just as she was about to gear up for her junior season, Beil made the choice to transfer. Maine lost Beil to the University of Connecticut this offseason, meaning it would not only welcome in six new freshmen, but would also have to replace a key member of what was expected to be a strong core.

UMaine soccer standout transfers to UConn

... She will be leaving a program that is looking for its first NCAA Tournament appearance to one that has earned 31 NCAA Tournament berths. UConn went 19-3-1 last fall and won its second American Athletic Conference championship in three years.

“Vivien came into the office in February and expressed her ambition to play professional soccer,” UMaine coach Scott Atherley said. “She felt it was in her best interest to be part of a top 25 program where she could train among the best players in the country and compete against the best players in the country.

“We very much wanted her to stay. She is an important part of our program. She is a great player who gave us everything we asked of her. At the same time, our philosophy is we only want players to be part of our program who sincerely want to be here,” Atherley said.
