The quarterback position takes center stage, as usual, as practices begin Monday.

... The team will practice on Monday and Wednesday nights and have scrimmages Saturday mornings, culminating in the Jeff Cole Spring Game on May 6.

There are a lot of key positional battles to watch, including quarterback, where returnees Drew Belcher and Chris Ferguson – both of whom redshirted last year – will compete with transfer Max Staver and incoming freshman Isaiah Robinson. Jack Walsh, who was on the roster last year, has transferred.

Here’s a look at four areas to watch in Maine’s spring practices.

Great overview by the Portland Press. Hope the BDN steps up and attends some scrimmages and report who is the leading candidate at QB. As I recall Ferguson looked good at last years Blue/White game. This could be one of the best springs to see who steps it up and looks good for next year.

PS-nice interview with Danny Collins and his hometown radio about his chances in the NFL. We all know he has the arm strength, just needs to improve his decision making. Best of luck Dan and the rest of the seniors ;)

UMaine football begins spring practice season

...Throughout the winter, the Black Bears have been confined to strength and conditioning practices in the Mahaney Dome, and Harasymiak says it's exciting just to get a new look at his improved squad.

"The winter is long," he said before practice began. "A lot of days in the dome, but [it's great] getting out here tonight, and just seeing how these guys have grown and progressed. Seeing their bodies, how fast they are, how much bigger and stronger they are. Tonight is the first step and as we go through spring ball, it's just an exciting time for the program."

UMaine football team begins spring workouts

...There are several key players to replace and at the top of the list is quarterback Dan Collins, who took every snap last season.

Junior Drew Belcher, who redshirted last season, started four games at quarterback in 2015 and appeared in nine games. He completed 78 of 120 passes for 728 yards and four touchdowns. He was also the team’s second-leading rusher with 314 yards on 88 carries and a TD.

He had completed 77 of 152 passes for 740 yards and three TDs in 2014 and rushed for 312 yards on 115 carries with a pair of TDs.

Senior Max Staver, a Brentwood, Tennessee, native who transferred from Houston Baptist after spending a redshirt year at the University of Florida and a year at Tyler Junior College (Texas), and redshirt freshman Chris Ferguson from Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, are the other candidates.

Redshirt freshman Jack Walsh has transferred.

So a couple of key items here....

1. Staver (Sr), Ferguson (Fr-R) and Belcher (Jr-R) are the 3 QBs vying to start. I really thought Belcher was done at QB....if he starts Maine will not have a good season IMO.

2. RB Zaire Williams is gone.....not a big loss. Mack (So) and Davis-Ray (Jr) were Maine's best and most consistent RBs last season.

Agree MJ, would love to see Belcher move to TE or FB. Also excited to see how good the recruited freshman QB will be this fall. He looks like he may be one the most talented QB's in a long time.

Seems like Robinson is destined to redshirt though.

Sure things for the 2017 season IMO:

1. Wide Receivers: Micah, Leel, and Earnest are as good as it gets in CAA football. Jaleel shined while Micah was suspended, and continued to excel before the injury. Micah is an all-around athlete. The things this kid does with the ball is spectacular, whether it's on special teams or offense, he's the best weapon on the field. Not far behind him is Earnest Edwards. As a true freshman he stood out as one of the most explosive kids we've seen in awhile.

2. Josh Mack: The kid has it all. The sky is the limit for the Rochester NY boys (Mack and Edwards)

3. Coaching: Coach H, Coen, and Hetherman already showed what they can do with this team. I see Umaine going to UNH and beating them easily and finishing the regular season at 9-2. (Very optimistic I know)

Ferguson is my pick to win the QB battle

I think it's up to either Ferguson or Staver to take hold of the starting QB spot. Right now it's Belcher's job to lose. If Staver or Ferguson beats him out, I think the Maine coaching staff will still put Belcher on the field most likely at TE. The best case scenario is someone clearly outplays Belcher and forces the position switch. Did anyone see where Coach H, hinted at experiments with players at different positions in the spring? The TE position needs an upgrade, so moving Belcher there could make sense. He has the size, toughness and athleticism to do it. I like Belcher minus his throwing ability. Maybe he has made major progress in that area with better coaching and training? a year on the sidelines watching and learning the mental aspects of a pro style offense can't hurt either.
