UMaine football team dominates Bryant in home opener

...The 43 first-half points were the most for UMaine since 2003 and the 60 points are the most since the Black Bears beat Delaware 62-28 in 2013.

The Black Bears racked up 536 yards of total offense.

UMaine (1-1) is off next weekend before taking on defending Football Championship Subdivision champion James Madison at Harrisonburg, Virginia on Sept. 23.

Mack finished with 255 rushing yards on 13 carries and three TDs and Ferguson completed 8 of 17 passes for 150 yards and three scores and was not intercepted.

Bryant turned the ball over eight times as the Black Bears came away with five interceptions and made three fumble recoveries.

UMaine rolls over Bryant for first football win
Josh Mack gains 255 yards and the Black Bears score 43 points in the first half of a 60-12 victory.

...Obviously, we’re very excited to get our first win as a team,” said Coach Joe Harasymiak. “I was pleased with the way these guys executed. We spent all week talking about us, worrying about us. I told them before the game to not worry about anything but us, improving ourselves, (playing) disciplined, fast, violent football. And we did that.”

Jamil Demby, a senior left tackle, credited the coaching staff for getting the team ready for Bryant (1-1), which put up 49 points in a season-opening win over Merrimack.

“I think the coaches did a great job all week,” said Demby. “I’ve never been more prepared in my life.”

UMaine football notebook: Mack breaks out with 255 yards, 3 TDs
UMaine sophomore running back Josh Mack plays less than three quarters, but takes full advantage of his chances

..Mack rushed for 255 yards and three touchdowns Saturday afternoon to lead the Black Bears to a 60-12 victory over the Bulldogs at Alfond Stadium. A year ago, in a 35-31 comeback win over Bryant, he rushed for what was a career-high 151 yards and three touchdowns.

Mack and the rest of the starters came out of the game with 4:24 left in the third quarter; otherwise, he might have had a shot at Maine’s single-game rushing record – 302 yards by Lorenzo Bouier on Nov. 1, 1980, in a 35-24 home win over Northeastern.

Mack scored on runs of 66, 13 and 60 yards in the first half.

It was a nice win.
However, the defensive backfield continues to draw unnecessary penalties.
Our coaching staff has to impress on these players that it is not alright!!!
Some of these player just don't get it!!!

That is probably the only negative from the defense, penalties. Sure the staff will be focusing on that for JMU. Was really impressed with how will the secondary covers and are run stoppers as well. The DL which most everyone was concerned about has done a great job so far, JMU will be a big test but we had the lead last yr entering the 4th quarter so a W is possible.

Coach Joe Harasymiak Talks About Maine's Winning Feeling

..."43-5, I have never been in a lot of those situations to be honest and I've never been in one as a head coach. The halftime is a little weird trying to figure out what you want to do and when you are getting the backups in. And you want to win in a classy way and do it respectfully. I thought our kids handled it well....

... “I was straightforward with him and he responded. He was more aggressive as a runner today,” said Harasymiak. “We emphasized all week that on the outside zone plays, you’ve got to put your foot in the ground and get north. That’s how the best teams in the NFL and at our level run it.

“Josh took a step forward today,” added Harasymiak.

“After the New Hampshire game, I watched a lot of tape. You score going north and south, not east and west,” said Mack, who gained 103 yards on 27 carries in the 24-23 loss to UNH.

“The coaches harped on us bettering ourselves, executing and being disciplined and we did that,” said Mack, who was 47 yards from Lorenzo Bouier’s single game UMaine rushing record of 302 yards, set in 1980 against Northeastern.
