UMaine football team to face rival UNH in rare 2017 opener

... “The way we lost the game at the end of the year … to get back on the field against them right away is going to be exciting,” said Harasymiak, referring to Morgan Ellman’s game-winning, 21-yard field goal with seven seconds left.

“It’s going to be huge for New England football. It will be fun. It will be something different. We usually play them at the end of the season although we did play them once in the middle of the year since I’ve been here,” he added. “A lot of the [Football Bowl Subdivision] schools schedule a big-time opponent the first weekend of the season. It will be cool to play them right off the bat.”

Harasymiak, UMaine’s former defensive coordinator, anticipates that Wildcat Stadium will be packed for the game and noted that playing in a warmer time of year should help attendance.

I think this is a huge mistake to play UNH as an opener. I think it takes away from what has been a great rivalry. I am not sure why a change like this is made.

I think that playing UNH in the opener is a great idea. I think that it will help strengthen the rivalry and be much more attrative to Maine fans to attend the game in Durham on Labor Day weekend than late November. I also think that it will be a more level playing field as it will be the opener for both teams....UNH always seems to have a bit more to play for at the end of the season.

DITTO.
Opener or Last work equally well for interest and excitement level, and Opener perhaps more so in some years, given end of season games can be meaningless other than rivalry aspect. Whereas Opener of the season ..... who knows, same rivalry aspect and the start of the season make it a "must" win !!?

Since 1986( At Least) maine has played UNH last game of the year and many years it was for playoff rights, conference champs etc. You all are entitle to your opinion no matter how wrong it is. There is no way an opener has more impact than a final game "rivalry weekend" is what they call it. In 86 & 87 football season Maine played UNH head to head final game. In 86 Maine beat UNH at the dungeon to knock UNH out of the playoffs, starting what would become one of the greatest rivalry in then the yankee conference. 1987 puts a top ranked U Maine team against top ranked UNH team in the final game of the year. The winner goes to 1AA playoffs loser goes home, the game was moved to Fitzpatrick stadium where U Maine won 28 -14 and those 2 years started the great rivalry in 1AA football. How can one even compare an opener to end of season game. If Maine can't beat UNH at there best so be it.

Great summary of the 86-87 season but flash forward 30 years and UNH has owned us something ridiculous like the winning the last 12 of 13 games. Not sure how you improve on last years game hype where the winner gets in and the loser go homes yet it was the least attended game by far of the year
Reason being weather, as usual Maine attendance starts strong and dwindles as the season progresses regardless of how meaningful the game is.
Think opening the season at UNH's new stadium will be great just like when we opened the Alfond with UNH in 99.
Here is the link for overall attendance in FCS, Maine averaging over 7,900 is great considering many years we never even had 7,900 for one game ;)

NOTE TO 2019 SCHEDULE :
Georgia Southern on UMaine football schedule in 2019

... According to UMaine sports information specialist Tyson McHatten, UMaine will receive a $325,000 guarantee for the game in Statesboro, Georgia.

“They have a rich tradition and they’ve made the step up [to the FBS]. They will be a great opponent,” said UMaine head coach Joe Harasymiak. “Games against FBS teams give us a good gauge of where we’re at. They help us prepare for our [Colonial Athletic Association] schedule.

“It also gives some of our guys a chance to see a part of the country they’ve never seen before,” added Harasymiak, whose Black Bears went 6-5 under the first-year coach last fall.

UMaine football set for spring practices and pro day

... Head coach Joe Harasymiak is understandably excited about his second year at the helm, saying the spring season is not just a chance to get back onto the field, but to see some up and coming talent as well.

"One of the most exciting parts is all these redshirt freshmen that we had, that nobody knows about," he said. "They'll come out in the spring and start to wow some people, and they [could possibly even] earn some starting spots out there."
