Large family helped UMaine quarterback develop competitive nature

...When you are the 10th of 11 children in your family, you have to be competitive. The redshirt freshman has nine sisters and a brother.

“We’re definitely a competitive family,” said Ferguson on Monday. “ A couple of my sisters played Division I basketball and lacrosse. My little sister (Lizzy) is looking to play lacrosse and volleyball. We also have a couple of singers in the family. There’s a whole range of things.”

“My dad (Pat) is really competitive in everything,” grinned Ferguson. “Growing up, we played a lot of golf. We still do. No matter what we did, he always wanted to beat me. Then I got good enough to beat him.”.

Once UMaine’s starting QB, Belcher moves to tight end
At 6-foot-3, 240 pounds, he has the size and the running ability to make the transition.

...Belcher said he was willing to move to another position because he’s seen other players at Maine shifted from one position to another with great results. Last year, for example, Max Andrews moved from tight end to center and was one of the team’s top offensive linemen.

“As they told me, ‘We’re not just moving you to move you, we’re moving you because we think you can make a difference,'” Belcher said of the coaching staff. “The way they do stuff here, the way they structure practices and meetings, the culture they’ve created, I enjoy being part of that and it makes me trust them...

Staver returns to practice after leaving program on Monday

ORONO - It's been a whirlwind week for Maine football head coach Joe Harasymiak. After naming Chris Ferguson as the team's starting quarterback on Saturday, senior backu[p quarterback, Max Staver left the program on Monday.

Staver returned to the program on Wednesday and has been cleared to practice and play.

Head coach Joe Harasymiak said he supported Staver's decision to leave and he's happy and excited to have him back.

Secondary, offensive line key building blocks for UMaine football team

... UMaine defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman likes what he has seen from his defense during the preseason.

“I’m confident in them. They play hard, they play physical and I’m really happy with the way they swarm to the ball and their tempo,” said Hetherman.

He said the defense is quicker than last year and bigger in a few positions. But the strength of the defense is the secondary.

Senior Najee Goode (40 tackles) and sophomore Manny Patterson were the starting corners a year ago and senior DeAndre Scott (44) was a starter at free safety. Redshirt junior strong safety Darrius Hart logged 47 tackles to rank fifth on the team.
