UMaine cornerback looking for stellar sophomore year after impressive freshman campaign

...But that is exactly the type of challenge University of Maine sophomore corner Manny Patterson loves.

He was chosen as UMaine’s Defensive Rookie of the Year last season as a true 18-year-old freshman after leading the team with 10 pass breakups. That was ninth best in the Colonial Athletic Association. He played in all 11 games, starting nine of them, and registered 23 tackles.

“You’re out there on an island. You’re out there on your own and everybody is looking at you, especially if they have a receiver they like to go to. I just say ‘I hope they do, I hope they do,” said Patterson in explaining why he enjoys the position.

“That’s why he came in and started as a freshman,” said UMaine defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman. “That’s the type of stuff we want to see.” ... -campaign/

Black Bears draw motivation from the wall
Small program still churns out big talent, Travis Lazarczyk writes.

...“Every time they come back, it’s amazing, because they have such great pride for this program. Before every game, or after a practice, they come,” Demby said. “They definitely motivate us. It kind of makes us appreciate it more, coming from Maine. A lot of first-year guys when they come here, they’re like, ‘OK, it’s cold.’ We don’t get a lot of nice gear, maybe. They might be underappreciative at first, but those guys really make you take a second look. Maine is definitely nothing but opportunity.”

When you walk across campus on a frigid January day, the University of Maine can feel like 1,000 miles from everywhere. The wall is proof that Orono isn’t so isolated after all.

“It’s extremely motivational, because it shows you hard work pays off. You can be from any school or any situation. Maine is an amazing platform for going to the next level. To see a guy do it is added motivation. He went through the same things we go through,” senior defensive back Najee Goode said. ... -the-wall/

Freshmen make strides in UMaine quarterback competition

...Head coach Joe Harasymiak said last Friday the upperclassmen have yet to prove they are worthy of the starting job outright at this point, and the strong performances from the freshmen have made it a difficult decision. He hopes to have an answer by the end of the week, and won't rule out going with a freshman if it means they will be the best man for the job.

"It's gonna take this last scrimmage, but we're close," he said. "I don't think the last scrimmage, Drew and Max probably played as well as they wanted to. I thought 'Ferg' and isaiah did well. This week has been a little bit up and down but i think we're starting to see some guys separate." ... ompetition

Injuries force UMaine football to postpone scrimmage, naming of starting QB
With a lack of linemen available on both offense and defense, the Black Bears push back a scrimmage from Monday to Friday.

...Harasymiak said that of the 15 offensive linemen that began training camp, only about six are healthy.

The same goes for the defensive line. The injuries aren’t considered serious, a matter of strains and sprains and pulls, but he didn’t want to risk further injury for any of the players.

“The starters are intact,” said Harasymiak, “but we don’t want to wear them out.”

He added that the Black Bears are going to cancel a third scrimmage, scheduled for Aug. 21. “Our goal is to be ready for the 31st,” he said. ... arting-qb/
