UMaine football confident despite questions

ORONO - There was a easy-going, but confident vibe at Alfond Stadium Tuesday morning at University of Maine football media day. Despite the positive mentality, the Black Bears still have a ways to go in order to get ready for the season opener against University of New Hampshire. The Black Bears are in the midst of a four-man quarterback battle, have three key players suspended, and need to solve their kicking woes from 2016.

Lawrence HS's Spencer Carey is hoping to have memorable senior year for UMaine football team

...The fifth-year senior will be playing his third position for the Black Bears as he makes the transition from safety to wide receiver to outside linebacker.

He will also be on all four special teams — kickoff, kickoff return, punt, punt return — and is the holder for the field goal unit. He can also be used as a long snapper.

“You need those guys in your program. There’s no doubt he’s got tremendous value for us,” said Black Bear second-year head coach Joe Harasymiak during Tuesday morning media day at Morse Field in Alfond Stadium. “He can play a lot of positions. We’ve moved him around to give him the best opportunity to get on the field. He will be on all of our special teams.

“He broke his hand last year and that hurt our special teams a little bit,’ added Harasymiak.

Harasymiak said Carey has “great hands” which makes him a natural to hold for field goals and extra points.

Healthy Spencer Carey ready for final football season at UMaine
Lawrence graduate to anchor special teams unit, will also play linebacker for Black Bears.

...Carey and the Black Bears open the season Aug. 31 at rival University of New Hampshire. If everything goes right during training camp, Carey will be on the field for most, if not all, Maine’s special teams situations. He’ll also play a new position on defense. After seeing time at wide receiver and safety earlier his career, the 6-foot-2, 216-pound Carey is now an outside linebacker, the rover in Maine’s defense.

“Just reading the linemen. It happens a little bit faster than reading wide receivers, as safeties do. Luckily I was able to get used to it in the spring. The transition’s pretty good,” Carey said of his new position.

Last season, Carey was all set to become a mainstay with the Black Bears special teams units, before a broken hand early in the season derailed everything. Carey finished 2016 with one tackle, after making 22 as a sophomore the previous season.

Jacob Williams adapts to new role with UMaine football team
Mt. Blue graduate moves from running back to tight end/H-back.

...“Third year here, third different position,” Williams said during Tuesday’s team media day activities.

Williams, a Mt. Blue High School graduate, is playing tight end/H-back for the Black Bears. Last season, the 6-foot, 210-pound Williams was a running back. In 2015, Williams spent a redshirt season practicing at linebacker for the Black Bears.

“He’s a strong kid, so we’ve got to figure out how to get him into a spot where he can compete on special teams. That’s the majority of his role this year,” Maine head coach Joe Harasymiak said of how he expects to use Williams this season. “For him, it’s just about competing on special teams right now.”

UMaine Lineman Demby has Grown Into a Force and a Leader

ORONO, MAINE (WABI) - Often unnoticed, the big men on the offensive line can be the difference between a win and a loss. UMaine football has one of the best around at left tackle in Jamil Demby.

Maine football's defense opening eyes during the second week of training camp

ORONO - Maine football is in the midst of its second week of training camp and while there are plenty of questions swirling around the offense, the defense has been impressive. The Black Bears are still looking for a starting Quarterback, center and are hoping to solidify the kicking game. "The Black Hole" on the other hand is opening eyes around camp, specifically the defensive backs.

Goode Says Defensive Communication is a Difference Maker This Year

ORONO, MAINE (WABI) - The “Black Hole” defense is looking good and hoping to keep making it tough on all the quarterbacks. Najee Goode is a senior corner this year and feels this year's group is tighter and more focused than any of his previous seasons.
