UMaine's Mahaney Dome collapses after snowfall

ORONO - One of the most identifiable objects on the University of Maine campus is the Mahaney Dome. The inflated structure normally houses UMaine athletics teams during the offseason or in inclement weather, but that won't be the case for the foreseeable future.

Ouch. Thank goodness for the timing of the collapse so that no one was in there.

UMaine plans to assess Mahaney Dome damage, repair roof

...He hopes UMaine can get it back in use by Jan. 17, when classes resume.

“We’re going to keep our heads up, move forward, stay positive and look for solutions,” said Biberstein, who added that the dome was properly inflated at the time of its collapse.

“Whenever we have a storm, we add [air] pressure,” he said of efforts to help prevent such collapses.

The Mahaney Dome roof collapsed under similar circumstances in 2007, putting the building out of service for about two weeks. In that instance, there was a vertical tear running 16-20 feet near the southwest door of the facility.

Ironic, as the whole winter athletic program was collapsing at almost the same time.

UMaine Mahaney Dome repaired, approved for temporary occupancy

The Black Bear baseball and softball teams were the first squads to use the dome after it was reopened, and the football and women’s soccer teams also have been able to use it.

“And we’re continuing to work with campus recreation to get the students back in. That should happen soon,” said Biberstein.

He said the dome will continue to be evaluated and the company handling the assessment will provide its report to the university in “three to five weeks.”

The dome was built in 2006 and measures 200 feet by 200 feet and stands 55 feet high at the center. It has an artificial grass surface. It was built with a $1 million gift from late UMaine benefactor and local businessman Larry K. Mahaney.
