MAINE BLANKS UCONN AT FENWAY, 4-0

Maine headed to historic Fenway Park to complete their series against the University of Connecticut Huskies.

The Black Bears were hungry for a victory right out of the gate, and Maine looked to its leader, Senior Captain Cam Brown to get the scoring going. Brown received a puck behind the goal line from Blaine Byron and made a strong move scoring cross crease passed UConn goaltender Adam Huska. Goaltender Rob McGovern remained perfect through the frame, stopping all 11 shots he faced.

Fabulous at Fenway: UMaine’s McGovern shuts out UConn

... “We had a guy coming back in the middle so if he was going to make a move to his backhand, he was going to have to make it quickly. He stayed on the forehand and I went with it and it worked out,” said McGovern, who absorbed the shot in his chest.

He also stopped Max Kalter’s breakaway backhander while UConn was shorthanded and trailing 3-0 in the third period.

“I was comfortable out there. The guys gave me confidence before the game and it spilled over into the game,” said McGovern.

“This was the most complete effort we’ve had all year,” he added

... “McGovern played well,” UConn Coach Mike Cavanaugh said. “We didn’t play a bad game. We just didn’t score. It’s a game of battles and Maine won more than we did.”

Those won battles resulted in a 44-31 shot advantage.

“A terrific game for our team,” Maine Coach Red Gendron said. “We played with great intelligence most of the game. We got pucks deep and pucks to the net.”

Maine and BU Rivalry Revisited as the two Schools Prepare to Meet on the ice

New Hampshire may be the big rival of the UMaine men’s hockey team, but in the early days of the program it was Boston University.

A rivalry because of the two legendary coaches…. Shawn Walsh and BU’s Jack Parker.

“Well I mean I think you had two very dynamic personalities and two exceptional coaches. I also think that there was enormous respect between the two men.

UMaine goalie geared up for Boston University men’s hockey series

... The two teams play on Friday night at Agganis Arena in Boston before venturing to Alfond Arena in Orono for Saturday’s contest. Both start at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday night’s game is already “very close to being a sellout” according to UMaine assistant athletic director for media relations Tyson McHatten.

“This will definitely be a good challenge for us. I’m excited for it,” said McGovern. “They have a lot of skilled guys. You can expect the unexpected from them. They’ll throw the puck on net from anywhere and crash the net.”

...UMaine coach Red Gendron said penalties did them in.

“That’s how it got away from us in the third period,” said Gendron who noted that two of his team’s three power plays were abbreviated because his players took penalties.

“For us, it’s about limiting the other team to no more than three or four power plays per game. Three or four are going to happen because it’s hockey,” said Gendron who added that another problem was that his team didn’t shoot the puck enough.

UMaine is now 1-7-1 when it gives the opposing team at least seven power play chances.
