Sources: UMaine baseball coach Steve Trimper to leave for Stetson

ORONO - We're just a few months away from college baseball season, but UMaine will have a different man at the top when the first pitch is thrown. According to multiple sources, UMaine head baseball coach Steve Trimper will be leaving Orono to take the head coaching position at Stetson University in Florida.

...Trimper reportedly was selected from among a group of five finalists that included Florida State associate head coach Mike Bell, former major league administrator and scout Todd Greene, Stetson associate head coach and recruiting coordinator Mark Leavitt and minor league manager Jeff Smith, a former Stetson star.

Trimper has spent the last 11-plus seasons at UMaine, directing the Black Bears to an overall record of 309-292-2. His teams won America East championships in 2006 and 2011, earning trips to the NCAA tournament.

Associate head coach Nick Derba, who is in his fourth season at UMaine, would appear to be a candidate to replace Trimper, at least on an interim basis.

Not sure how the heck Trimper got hired for this job as I see it as a big step up for him but I am extatic he did. Wasn't a fan. Looking forward to a new coach at the helm.

Would love to see Mike Coutts slide over from softball. Make it happen Kreech.

Hopefully they make the right hire. Creech seems to be turning things around, though the jury is still out on Bob Walsh. Barron was a slam dunk. Harasymiak as well. Abbott screwed up hockey by hiring Red and not bringing in Montgomery. Creech compounded the issue by extending him. Abbott also screwed up basketball extending Woodward and Creech was left to clean up the mess. Coutts was ready to go when they moved on from Winkin. Kosty was a good coach but Trimper is mediocre at best. Really surprised Stetson brought him in. For his sake, he better have a damn good recruiting coordinator and pitching coach.

... Derba spent six years in the St. Louis Cardinals’ system after the organization drafted him in the 30th round of the 2007 Major League Baseball draft following a career at Manhattan College, where he played for Trimper.

Derba advanced as high as the Triple-A level and was a member of the 2012 Texas League champion Springfield Cardinals.

Derba retired in 2012 to pursue a coaching career. He served as hitting coach for the Cape Cod League’s Chatham Anglers before coming to Orono.
