I agree congrats and to have beaten out 100 plus applicants and D1 standing coaches such as Jack Leggett is impressive. GO Black Bears!!!

who else where the high profile candidates?

That was the #1 and Creech said yesterday there were other standing D1 coaches who applied.

Congratulations to everyone involved in this great in house hiring of Nick Derba. Congratulations to the 4 committee members and to AD Creech.

Great to see them following the path of the hirings in Football, Women's Basketball (interim) Softball and now baseball.

Great to see the awarding of loyalty and coaches who know the situation at hand.

As the old saying goes "A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush" or for today "a coach from inside is worth 103 in the bush".

Great hire! UMaine is on a hot streak 4 in house coaches in a row. Football, Softball, Women's Basketball (Interim) and now baseball.

Congratulations to Coach Derba and I am sure his players are very happy.

Derba was available for pennies on the dollar...bet we never find out who those "high profile" candidates were. ;)

I bet some applied and then saw the baseball budget..enough to scare anyone away!

But congrats to Coach Derba! Hopefully he gets the team to perform more like they did in the tourney...and less like they did in the regular season.

I don't believe there were any " high profile" candidates. It's mystifying how this took so long. In the end they got it right though. 8 months until Lubbock.

Derba named UMaine baseball coach

... “I’m very excited but relief is more of what I’m feeling right now,” Derba, 31, said late Friday morning. “I’m ready to go. I want to keep pushing the program in the right direction.”

Derba’s contract is for three years and will pay him $72,000 per year.

“Nick proved himself this season as interim head coach and in the national search process that began after the season ended and attracted a large group of highly qualified candidates,” Creech said in the release. “We are confident in Nick’s ability to recruit and coach high-caliber student-athletes who will be champions in the classroom, on the field and in the community.”

Among 104 applicants, Derba was one of two finalists along with Brunswick native Gabe Ribas, who has spent the past six seasons at Santa Clara University in California, where he is the associate head coach, pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.
