Feb 2 WHOCKEY vs University of New Hampshire 2:00 PM

Black Bears Welcome UNH for the Weekend

ORONO, Maine – Maine women's ice hockey will be hosting one of their longtime rivals, the University of New Hampshire (UNH), for a pair of matches this weekend, kicking off with a puck drop at 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

Last time the Wildcats met up with the Black Bears was in Durham, N.H. early on in the season (Oct. 2017). Scoring was opened up by freshman Michelle Weis giving Maine an early 1-0 lead just minutes after puck drop with her first NCAA goal. Unfortunately, UNH retaliated with two goals of their own in the first period, and neither team could capitalize on another scoring opportunity in the remaining two periods. Sophomore Carlee Turner tied up the match followed by senior Julia Fedeski tucking in the game-winner on a power play, 2-1.

Maine women's hockey looks to break losing skid in major series with UNH

ORONO - Whenever the New Hampshire Wildcats come to Orono, the mantra is usually the same: Beat UNH.

But that's not necessarily the case for Maine women's hockey. Instead, it's to get back on the right track.

Defensive zone crucial for Maine women's hockey against Providence

ORONO - Maine women's hockey enters a crucial series against Hockey East foe Providence as the No. 9 team in the country, and much of that has been due to its goaltender.

Carly Jackson is sporting a 1.82 goals against average on the season, and has helped keep Maine in the conversation for top teams in the conference. But while the Black Bears have struggled to put the puck in the net at times this year, they have also struggled to give her the necessary support on defense in the second half. And the team has identified that as a key problem.

No.9 Women's Hockey Takes Final Road Trip of Regular Season to Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After shutting down UNH, 3-0, last weekend, the Maine Black Bears earned back their No. 9 national ranking in the USCHO Division I Women's Ice Hockey Poll. The Maine women also switched places with Providence College in the Hockey East standings as the Black Bears lifted above the Friars by one point for second place.

Maine women's ice hockey will be traveling on their final road trip of the regular season to Providence for a two-game series. The first puck will drop at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Schneider Arena.

Providence and Maine met up in November for a single game at the Alfond Arena. Thanks to a pair of power play goals by freshman Michelle Weis, the game was settled at a 2-2 overtime draw. Sophomore Tereza Vanisova added on a pair of helpers while four different Friars passed out assists. Evening up the score for Providence was top-scorer freshman Maureen Murphy with both goals.

Maine women's hockey skates to 1-1 tie with Providence
http://www.foxbangor.com/sports/item/23 ... providence

WHOCKEY at Providence College
T 1-1
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 9 Maine Black Bears and Providence College Friars break even settling to a 1-1 tie for their second draw of the season after settling to a 2-2 tie back in November. With this tie at the Schneider Arena on Saturday afternoon, Maine (17-9-5, 11-6-4 WHEA) remains in second place in Hockey East with Providence (14-11-7, 10-7-5 WHEA) just one point behind on their tail in third.

After defending countless shots in their end throughout the majority of the first period, the Black Bears took initiative and came alive on the attack. With a perfectly placed feed by Ebba Strandberg directly in front of net, Catherine Tufts powered by momentum plus being tripped up by a defender, used her entire body to ensure the puck crossed over the goal line as she slid into the net with the puck. With 5:10 on the clock, Maine commanded a 1-0 lead. Anna Zikova grabbed her 11th assist of the season to start of the play.

Closing out the first period, Zikova fired a deep shot taking a hard bounce off of Ariane Julien as she stepped in the way for the block. Without hesitation, Julien recovered from the hit and chased down the puck racing against both Maine defenders and just barely beating them out, she skated one-on-one towards net minder Carly Jackson and snuck in an unassisted goal. With her first collegiate goal, the Friars evened the score, 1-1, with 2:54 left to play in the opening frame. Providence held a 15-7 shot advantage over Maine advancing in the second period.
