... The victory was the first-place Black Bears’ sixth in a row and 12th in their last 13 games as they improved to 15-18 overall, 9-1 in America East.

The Retrievers fell to 19-23 and 3-7, respectively.

Junior right-hander Molly Flowers picked up the win with 6 1/3 innings of four-hit, one-run ball. She struck out eight and walked two. Annie Kennedy finished up and allowed one hit.

The Black Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Erika Leonard doubled to left and went to third on a wild pitch and. After Rachel Carlson walked, Leonard scored when Rachel Harvey singled through the left side.

Most Definitely looks like that very tough early schedule accomplished exactly what Coach Mike Coutts was hoping !!

So, Maine now sits at 9-1 with 7-games left, including one v. UMass Lowell (9-4, w/ only 4-games left) on Wed. in Orono and a crucial 3-game series next weekend in Binghamton. They finish up hosting UAlbany for the final 3-games.

Go Get 'Em Black Bears !!!

Alyssa Derrick wins conference honor for second consecutive week

ORONO - Just last week, UMaine softball's Alyssa Derrick won her first Player of the Week award for the America East conference. While that is certainly an impressive accomplishment, it is starting to become routine.

Derrick picked up the recognition for the second time in a row, following a three-victory week for the Black Bears. The sophomore third baseman tallied five RBI, including three home runs which put her conference-leading total at 12 for the season.

First Pitch up in Orono for our Conference Leading Lady Bears against conference foe UMass-Lowell is 4:00pm, Mothah Nature willing.???

Weird mid-week single games throughout the AE today, but this one is a matchup of two 9-win teams and a chance for UMaine to avenge its ONLY AE Conference loss.

Go Pound That Lil' White Ball Girlz !!!!!!!!!!!

Slugging sophomore stands tall for UMaine softball team

ORONO, Maine — When Alyssa Derrick trots over to third base before the start of the first inning, she knows the opposing third-base coach will probably ask her the question she hears all the time.

“Oh my God! How tall are you?” grinned Derrick, a sophomore at the University of Maine.

Derrick is not a prototypical college third baseman. She stands 6-foot-3.

“On our spring trip, we were in Colorado and the players on the team we were going to play in the next game were asking our pitchers how tall I was. They were putting bets on it,” said Derrick.
