Maine field hockey excited to kick off season

The Black Bears nearly touched the NCAA Tournament last year, dropping to Albany in the conference championship game. Coach Josette Babineau has high expectations once again for this season, even as the team welcomes a handful of freshmen to the equation.

"We like to play fast. We like to play an athletic game. We like to be a more transitional team. We have a lot of experience in our back line and in goal and we really expect that to be the area where we're building from," she said.

And the process of getting the team into a building mode begins on the first day. Cochran, who splits time with fellow goalie Emily Corbett, believes the team must take every game as it comes this year, which will enable a quick start.

FH: Program building around potent British Columbia presence

UMaine field hockey program building around potent British Columbia presence

... Head coach Josette Babineau said the trend began with her first recruiting class, which included British Columbians Kelly Newton, Stephanie Gardiner and Brittany Fleck. Newton went on to become a two-time All-American and set seven school scoring records.

Gardiner was All-Northeast Region and All-America East pick and Fleck was an All-America East choice.

“Since then, it seems like we’ve been able to get one or two players from that region every year,” said Babineau. “I get so many emails from [British Columbia] players who refer to players they know on our roster now. When I go to B.C. they talk about the Maine program as the program they know, which is really cool.”

UMaine field hockey polls second in America East's East Division

ORONO - The University of Maine field hockey team will look to reach the America East Championship Game yet again in 2016, and it turns out, the conference has faith in that possibility.

America East released its 2016 preseason field hockey poll Tuesday, where UMaine placed second in the East Division of the conference with 13 points and one first place vote. Just ahead of it is Albany, the team that defeated it in the title game last year. The Great Danes come in first with 16 points and four first place votes.

UMaine Field Hockey Ranks Just Outside NFHCA Top 20

The National Field Hockey Coaches Association puts UMaine just outside the top 20 preseason pole with the next most points. North Carolina is the top ranked team. UMaine hosts the Tar Heels on September 18th. Messalonskee grad Kristy Bernatchez is on the UNC team.
