A dream come true: Field hockey standouts commit to UMaine

Two local girls who have always wanted to play field hockey at the University of Maine are going realize their dreams beginning next fall.

Speedy forwards Brooke Sulinski of Old Town and Abby Webber of Garland have verbally committed to attend UMaine.

They are teammates for the Blackbear Elite club field hockey program.

They are recruited walk-ons and won’t receive athletic scholarships but they are happy to be getting a chance to play for their state university.

UMaine field hockey receiving more recognition

ORONO - UMaine field hockey has quietly been one of the more successful programs in the area in recent years, but the Black Bears are now making their success known.

After a scorching start to the season, UMaine has consistently been ranked among the top teams in the country. Despite losing their first game of the season last week, the Black Bears still boast a 5-1 record and were selected 20th in the most recent NFHCA coaches poll

Senior for powerhouse North Carolina excited for ‘home’ game at UMaine

Amy and Brian Bernatchez were puzzled initially when their daughter Kristy Bernatchez told them she wanted to play field hockey at the University of North Carolina.

Bernatchez had scored a state-record 47 goals as a senior at Messalonskee High School in Oakland and was selected Miss Maine Field Hockey. She was heavily recruited by a number of Division I schools.

But North Carolina was a national powerhouse coached by National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Famer Karen Shelton, who has guided the Tar Heels to six NCAA championships and more than 600 wins in 36 seasons.

National power edges UMaine field hockey team

ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine field hockey team turned in an impressive performance against perennial powerhouse the University of North Carolina in front of a crowd estimated at 657 Sunday morning but the talented Tar Heels emerged with a hard-fought and deserved 3-1 triumph.

Senior forward Lauren Moyer scored her team-high fifth and sixth goals of the season in the first half of the entertaining affair and redshirt freshman Catherine Hayden scored an important insurance goal in the second half as the Tar Heels improved to 6-2 and erased the memory of a 2-1 loss at Boston College on Friday.

Field hockey team needs upgraded facilities. 0 permanent seating for a nationally ranked D3 team would be unacceptable, let alone a D1 team.

Maine Majestix alumnae enjoy rare head-to-head competition

ORONO, Maine — It was a Maine Majestix field hockey club reunion of sorts on Sunday when the University of North Carolina played the University of Maine.

Kristy Bernatchez of Belgrade is the starting left back for the third-ranked Tar Heels, who beat the Black Bears 3-1. In her only collegiate game in Maine, the former Messalonskee High School star played against former Majestix teammates Adriana Martineau from Norridgewock, Maddy Cummings from Belfast, Riley Field of Sidney and Clinton’s Lilla Tilton-Flood.

The Waterville-based Majestix, a club program, was founded by Bernatchez’s parents, Brian and Amy, in 2007.
