This seems to be a popular train of thought these days and I couldn't disagree more. The UM athletic administration has had a big hand in lowering the expectations of Maine fans through their surrogates (BDN!!!!) but it's gotten to the point that uninformed apathy and extreme negativity are bringing UM athletics to their knees. What is this "delusion" that people keep spouting off about? That hockey fans expect a .500 record someday? That men's basketball fans expect double digit wins someday? That Maine football fans expect to beat UNH someday? That UM fans expect every team on the courts, ice and fields to play with the same energy as their opponents?

The only true delusion I've seen is that UM administrators expect fans to buy tickets and show up at sporting events despite mounting losses year after year after year. Add in increased ticket prices for a lesser product, an ever growing shroud of secrecy surrounding the UM athletic dept, and quite frankly.....more interesting, rewarding and enjoyable ways for people to spend their time and dollars.....and you get the current sh*tsville climate that is UM athletics.

Again.....how are Maine fans being "delusional"????

All of this.

If used properly, a Division 1 college athletic department can bring in much needed cash and notoriety. There's a rich hockey history, NHL & NFL alumni list, and strong history for women's basketball. There's a lot to draw from here. To see people settle and make excuses is disappointing at best.

It's a common word that one person used ?
AND, used In reference to those that think UMaine is and should be some kind of perennial powerhouse in athletics ?
Based on many definitions of the simple word, that would make it a pretty accurate assessment for those who think UMaine should somehow be some kind of Little School powerhouse in all kinds of sports (and Lil' School is what it is, .... Sorry) on a regular basis.
Occasionally Great and yeah sure, maybe, but ....?? Aye Yah !!!!!! Anything more ...... (= delusional).

NOW THEN !!!??? How about former UMaine Black Bear Coach Jim Montgomery headed to the Hockey Final Four !!?

That is the topic ...... maybe .... ?????? .....

Former UMaine star guides Denver to Frozen Four final

CHICAGO — The University of Denver hockey team, perched atop the national polls for months, will play on Saturday for a chance to prove the voters right.

Denver, coached by former University of Maine star Jim Montgomery, jumped out to an early lead and never looked back on Thursday night, beating Notre Dame 6-1 in the NCAA Frozen Four semifinals and advancing to the national championship game for the first time in more than a decade.

Dylan Gambrell had a pair of goals while Emil Romig, Henrik Borgstrom, Tariq Hammond and Evan Ritt each scored once for Denver, which was helped by 16 saves from goalie Tanner Jaillet.

“I don’t really know what to say,” Pioneers coach Jim Montgomery said, marveling at what his team did from start to finish. “I’m just amazed at the effort our team produced in a big-time game against a really, really good college hockey team.”

...Lukosevicius’ hat trick was the first in a national finale since Denver coach Jim Montgomery had a trio of goals for the University Maine in the 1993 title game when the Black Bears defeated Lake Superior State 5-4. Lukosevicius was named the tournament’s most outstanding player.

“I didn’t know that was the first hat trick (since 1993) but I’m glad to be a part of both, and I’m glad we won the championship,” said Montgomery, the fifth person in NCAA hockey history to win NCAA titles as a player and coach.

UMaine’s influence felt in Denver’s Division I hockey title win

... Montgomery left Dubuque to become the head coach at Denver in 2013. UMaine also was seeking a head coach, but Montgomery said at the time he was never contacted about the job by UMaine officials.

UMaine hired Red Gendron, who had been an assistant the late Shawn Walsh’s UMaine staff during the 1992-1993 season.

Montgomery said there were a lot of similarities between that UMaine team and his Denver team, though he noted the UMaine squad was the “best team in the country from day one.” His Pioneers became the nation’s best team over the second half of the season, winning 18 of their last 19 games.
