Also 3rd person, but based on brief conversations with both a player or two and someone who watched a couple of the intra-squad scrimmages over the weekend:

- Pitchers apparently looked pretty good facing live-hitting, especially the top-returnees that need to anchor the starting rotation (Miller, Jebb, Scanlan). Several of the new guys also looked surprisingly good (or at least as good as one was hoping/expecting), and there actually are several bright spots on middle relief/closers (Cox, Latta threw well and threw strikes !), but also some question marks, mostly control wise.
- Benoit is going in for surgery and will medical red-shirt this year, so he's now out of the picture (closer role will now be ???). Couple other guys experienced some soreness (to be expected), but no way to tell yet whether it's just that or might be a more serious issue pending follow-up.
- Infield looked very solid, which is a good sign as we've only got 4-5 guys for the 4, 5 and 6 spots.
- Hitting looked pretty good overall other than perhaps one or two of the guys not having their best days at the plate.
- Outfielders are a bit hard to judge inside the dome, but it's a competition between about 4-6 guys, who can all play OF well enough to start.

Time now to just wait for Vegas in eleven days, at which time we/I will have some first-hand observations of multiple innings of actual game performance versus a very credible opponent ! Let's Hope for the Best !

College Notebook: UMaine gambles on pitching for Las Vegas trip

JENN MENENDEZ

February 5, 2009

The University of Maine baseball team plans to add three freshmen pitchers to its starting rotation this season for a total of seven starters.

Right-handers Keith Bilodeau of Bourne, Mass., Pat Quinn of Quaker Hill, Conn., and A.J. Bazdanes of Nashua, N.H., began throwing when the baseball team opened practice Sunday, the first allowable day by the NCAA.

Maine Coach Steve Trimper hopes the three will be effective starters and help the team return to the America East playoffs.

Maine went 20-28-1 last year, just 8-15 in the conference, and missed the postseason in part because of a lack of pitching depth.

"Pitching has always been our Achilles' heel. We have a little more depth than we've ever had," said Trimper. "It took a couple of years to build and with three freshmen we have seven quality guys we're looking to start."

Maine returns four starters: three sophomores in right-hander Matt Jebb, and left-handers Kevin Scanlan and Jonathan Balentina, and junior right-hander Joe Miller.

Baseball opens Feb. 20 in Las Vegas with a four-game series against UNLV.

"We need a good year," said Trimper. "We struggled last year because of depth and not knowing how to play college baseball. We had a lot of talent but lost 10 or 12 close games we should have won."

The softball team, meanwhile, began practicing as soon as players returned from the semester break. The season begins Friday under a new coach, Deb Smith, with a game against Virginia Tech at Chattanooga, Tenn. Smith previously coached the team from 1999 to 2004.

"I would really like to see how we stack up against them," said Smith. "They were in the College World Series last year. But if we can play well and really give them a run, it will be a huge confidence boost for this group."

The softball team also missed the playoffs in 2008 after going just 11-39 and starting with an 0-28 skid.

This year the team opens with a 30-game trip to Tennessee, South Carolina and Florida before heading north at the end of March. Conference play opens March 28.

Does anyone know the exact location Maine will be playing their games in Florida? Husson will be in that area during the same time period, and we would like to see some of the Maine games as well if possible. Thanks.

The games on March 3-7 will be played at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven (210 Cypress Garden Boulevard if you are getting driving directions).

The games on the 9-15th will be played at Rollins College in Winter Park, just north of Orlando; the field is not directly on campus, but is nearby.

I don' t know what the plans are with respect to Maine having any live audio of the games, but the Rollins baseball site indicates that the games that Maine plays against Rollins will be live audio, so those who cannot be there can listen to at least a few games.
