Luka Doncic, Slovenia's Wonder Boy, is the wild card in NBA draft

He has marveled many with his array of basketball skills while becoming a legend in Europe, leaving an abundance of NBA personnel folks intrigued about drafting the wondrous Luka Doncic.

Yet the question NBA people wrestle with is how Doncic’s talents will translate from the competition he faced as a force with Real Madrid to the NBA, with its more athletic and talented players.

The Slovenian playmaker nicknamed “Wonder Boy” did not withdraw his name from the NBA draft early entry list as the deadline arrived Monday, an encouraging sign to teams that Doncic is ready to cross the Atlantic Ocean to ply his craft against the best in the world.

Dennis Chambers
@DennisChambers_
Lonnie Walker grew up a Sixers fan. Says he’s not picky where he winds up, but it would mean a lot to play in Philly.

Knicks' brass to meet with Michael Porter Jr.

Knicks' brass will travel to Chicago next week to meet with Missouri freshman forward Michael Porter Jr., a league source told SNY.tv.

The 6-foot-10 Porter Jr. is expected to meet in Chicago with all of the top teams in the draft lottery, the league source said. He held his Pro Day on Friday in Chicago, and Knicks scouts Walker Russell and Fred Cofield attended, per a league source.

Porter Jr. missed most of his only season at Missouri after having microdiscectomy surgery of the L3-L4 spinal discs in November, but he could turn out to be one of the best pros in this Draft.

Porter Jr. was a phenomenal scorer in high school, winning the prestigious Peach Jam title in the summer of 2016 with teammate Trae Young, a fellow projected Top 10 pick who has also worked out for the Knicks. Their Mokan Elite team beat a PSA Cardinals team that featured fellow lottery pick Mohamed Bamba of Harlem.

NBA draft second-round sleepers and steals to watch

Four hundred fifty-six players played 100 minutes or more in the NBA last season. Ninety-two of those 456 (20 percent) were not drafted at all, while 100 (22 percent) were second-round picks.

There will be quite a few players from this draft class who will carve out long careers in the league, despite not hearing their names called by Adam Silver on Thursday. The challenge for teams (and us) is to identify which ones. Anyone can tell you that Deandre Ayton, Marvin Bagley III or Luka Doncic should be good NBA players for a long time. Being able to identify the next Nikola Jokic and Draymond Green in the second round -- or Wesley Matthews and Fred VanVleet in the pool of undrafted free agents -- is where the league's best talent evaluators truly show their stripes.

It's usually role players -- deemed to be the least upside laden -- who fall in this range. So we revisited a piece from earlier this year on finding elite role-players to see which archetypes the NBA is most actively seeking and then figure out which players in this year's crop might fit that bill.
